"new nostalgia products" doesn't
present a problem to loyal fans.
Nor does the haunting memory
of the past.
In Decades, Mr. Shulman and
Mr. Krout have created a time-
less Hollywood milieu and rock 'n'
roll heaven. Marilyn Monroe dolls
appear near Betty Boop, who for
unknown reasons has become the
fetish of many Jewish women,
says Mr. Shulman. Besides Mar-
ilyn, Elvis, Lucy, Audrey Hep-
burn, Clark Gable and the Three
Stooges, there's an eerie reminder
that these pop-culture icons share
a common destiny.
"It sounds funny, but most of
these people are worth more dead
than alive," says Mr. Shulman.
"Elvis today has more lawyers
than the White House."
Yet a "living' pop-music icon is
strikingly absent from the nos-
talgia landscape.
One day, Madonna, known for
her outrageousness and market-
ing savvy as much as her music,
just could be to the nostalgia busi-
ness what BM Gates has meant
to personal computing. The fact
that she's very much alive doesn't
stop Mr. Shulman from specu-
lating: "Madonna has tremendous
potential." El
Zvi Zur Resigns
Chairman Post
Jerusalem (JPFS) — Zvi Zur an-
nounced his resignation as chair-
man of Israel Aircraft Industries
Mr. Zur said he will step down
from the firm on Jan. 22, adding
that he had already informed
government leaders — including
the late Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin — in October.
The former IDF chief of staff,
who has served as chairman for
three years, told IAI's board of di-
rectors that many elements of the
firm's two-year-old recovery pro-
gram have already been imple-
mented: a decrease and
reorganization of the workforce,
an agreement in principle with
the banks to which IAI is in-
debted, and the conversion of as-
sembly lines enabling the
manufacture of civilian products.
"The recovery program at IAI
has not ended," Mr. Zur said.
"The main areas of the compa-
ny's agenda have still not been
resolved."
Mr. Zur noted that the com-
pany is still facing a number of
problems including high public
sector wages, the failure to ease
union rules that would allow for
privatization, and an overvalued
shekel, which has hurt exports.
Israel Radio reported that for-
mer OC Northern Command and
ex-director general of Tahal,
Avigdor Ben-Gal, is being con-
sidered as a replacement for. Mr.
Zur.
