ELLEN JOYCE SPECIAL ip THE JEWISH NEWS

he gold pin glistening on
Saundra Goosen's dark
sweater is a conversation
piece. That's exactly what
it's intended to be.
Ms. Goosen, a Birmingham-
based marketing strategist, con-
ceived of the pin for the Detroit
area chapter of the Alzheimer's
Association. She also imple-
mented its sale to raise not only
awareness of the debilitating and
deadly disease, but funds for the
organization established to bat-
tle it.
Ms. Goosen said she knew she
had to find a different
way to reach poten-
tial contributors, and
"not with another
mug or sweatshirt,
but something they
(contributors) could
really support. You
really have to make
it relevant to the or-
ganization."

The initiative is one of the
most visible successes of Ms.
Goosen's Birmingham company,
Fundraising Concepts Inc. She
said she saw a need for not-for-
profits to restructure the way
they do business. The tried-and-
true techniques weren't having
the needed impact.
"They (not-for-profits) were re-
ally missing the boat. They don't
know how to merchandise prod-
ucts effectively within their own
organization, so I came up with
a merchandising and marketing
plan for them."
