en the Jewish Nation-
al Fund decided to rec-
ognize Michigan State
University President M.
Peter McPherson with its Tree of
Life Award, the last thing the or-
ganization expected was contro-
versy.
Now the JNF must find some-
one else to honor during a cere-
mony scheduled for March, or
postpone the event. At the same
time, the organization vows to
stay neutral on the conflict sur-
rounding its 1996 honoree.
Some gay members of the Jew-
ish community began protesting
JNF's selection of President
McPherson because of his oppo-
sition to granting domestic part-
ner benefits to gay and lesbian
faculty and staff at MSU.

President McPherson defers JNF honor.

against all people," said former
Michigan State instructor Lev
Raphael.
In late November, Mr. Raphael
and MSU Professor Gershen
Kaufman, both of Okemos, began
a letter-writing campaign to local
and national leaders protesting
the selection of Mr. McPherson.
Edward Rosenthal, Southfield
director of t Jewish National
Fund, said President McPherson
is not the first honoree to ask for
a postponement, and JNF oblig-
es those requests.
Mr. Rosenthal said President
McPherson was chosen after care-
ful consideration involving the
JNF national office and based on
discussion with Jewish leadership
in Lansing, who unanimously ap-
proved the award.
He said past JNF dinners have
drawn protests from segments of
the community who opposed hon-
orees U.S. Rep. Carl Pursell and
Cardinal Edmund Szoka, among
others.
Mr. Raphael said he contacted

the MSU president to protest the
JNF award. But MSU Vice Pres-
ident of University Relations Ter-
ry Denbow said Mr. McPherson
first learned of the dissent a few
weeks ago when a reporter from
the student-run State News called
his office.
According to Mr. Denbow, Pres-
ident McPherson asked to defer
the honor for two years because

"Jews should be
sensitive to
discrimination and
bigotry."

—Lev Raphael

"he thought that for the president
of Michigan State University to
receive such an impressive and
meaningful award, he should be
here (in his position) longer."
Mr. McPherson is in his third
year as MSU president.
Mr. Denbow didn't know if Mr.
McPherson has deferred other
awards.
Chairman of the MSU Board
of Trustees Robert Weiss said the
public should take the deferment
"at face value."
"It's unfortunate his actions are
seen, in any way, as a decline be-
cause that is absolutely not the
case," Mr. Denbow said.
The Tree of Life is a humani-
tarian award for "outstanding
community involvement and ded-
ication to the cause of American-
Israeli friendship and devotion to
peace and the security of human
life."
In the recent years, JNF has
honored Mayor Dennis and Trudy
Archer, Ford Motor Co. Vice
Chairman Louis Ross and public
relations executive Anthony M.
Franco. ❑
