As you look up, you see the
gallery or balcony that is set
aside for women worshippers.
The second synagogue on the
tour is the single-room Canton
one. Canton meant corner in me-
dieval Venetian. You get to the
shul by climbing a staircase. As
you climb the fairly steep stairs,
you see commemorative in-
scriptions on the walls from
many years gone by.
Once in the hall of worship,
you see benches running along
the wall, and rich wood panel-
ing. The pews, which are the old-
est elements in the room, run
parallel to the longer side of the
hall.
Another point of interest is
the bimah where the rabbi con-
ducts the service. The bimah is
decorated with the same geo-
metrical motif as the ceiling.
Also beautiful are the eight slen-
der columns which support a
light cornice.
After visiting the two beau-
tiful synagogues, our tour con-
tinued onto the Museum of
Jewish Art. This interesting col-
lection includes ancient parch-
ment manuscripts, precious
objects such as gold candlesticks,
curtains rich with gold embroi-
dery, a hand-carved wooden
chair, handsome perfume con-
tainers and goblets.
During the tour, our Venetian
guide gave us some interesting
background information about
the ghetto.
The first Jews came to Venice
as early as 1373, but they did not
live in the ghetto. The lived on
an island that was named after
this new population and was
called Giudecca.
In the 16th century, the Jew-
ish community was given a new
location in Venice. The area was
called New Foundry which
translates in Italian into Geto
Nuova. The Venetian word
"geto" (pronounced "jet-o")
means foundry. The new site for
the Jews was an abandoned iron
works, and it had thick walls
around it.
The Italian word "Geto"
changed its spelling and pro-
nunciation when there was an in-
flux of German Jews into the
area, and they Germanicized the
word to our present day "ghetto."
Our guide told us that Venice
welcomed the Jews to its shores
in the 14th century because of
their ability to conduct business,
and deal successfully with mon-
ey. Despite their confinement to
one area of the city, many Jews
gained a good deal of social and
commercial power.
However, Jews were not al-
lowed to own property, and they
had to wear a special emblem
that could be recognized outside
the ghetto. First the emblem
was a yellow badge. Later on it
was a scarlet hat.
