U.N. Appeal
On Priebke
Rome (JTA) — A lawyer in Rome
has appealed to the United Na-
tions to have former SS Capt.
Erich Priebke tried on war crimes
charges in an international court.
Mr. Priebke, 82, was extradit-
ed in November from Argentina
to Italy to stand trial for involve-
ment in the March 1944 mass
murder of 335 civilians, including
75 Jews, in the Ardeatine Caves
near Rome.
Pietro Nicotera, the lawyer for
a relative of one of the victims,
wrote to the United Nations and
to Italian legal authorities. He
urged that Mr. Priebke be tried
in an international arena on geno-
cide charges.
"In allowing his extradition, the
Argentine Supreme Court recog-
nized that the fact of having killed
75 Jews who were not prisoners
of war" constitutes the "crime of
genocide," Nicotera wrote, ac-
cording to the Rome dailyliMes-
saggero.
A preliminary hearing had
been adjourned pending a deci-
sion, which is expected in March,
on whether the Jewish commu-
nity, family members of the vic-
tims and others can participate
in the trial as civil plaintiffs.
Israelis Killed
In Mine Blast
Jerusalem (JTA) Three Israelis
were killed and one moderately
injured when their jeep ran over
and detonated a land mine in the
Sinai.
The victims were all relatives
or friends of the Nimrodi family,
known for its ownership of the Is-
raeli daily Ma'ariv and other busi-
ness enterprises.
A group of 13 Israelis had flown
down to Sharm el-Sheik, where
they rented four jeeps for a desert
outing in the dunes of the Sinai.
Shortly after leaving the main
road, one of the jeeps drove over
an old land mine.
The dead were identified as
Ruth Weissberg-Nimrodi, 35; Zvi
Shayevitch, 47; and Ariella Kor-
man, 38.
Ms. Korman's husband,
Yohanan Korman, was injured in
the explosion.
The charge, apparently from a
minefield laid by the Egyptians
before the 1967 Six-Day War, had
apparently been washed into the
popular jeep route during flood-
ing.
Mines strewn by both Egypt-
ian and Israeli forces remain in
the area. Popular jeep mutes skirt
the mapped fields.
Military experts have said un-
exploded mines from earlier con-
flicts represent one of the greatest
threats to civilian populations
around the world.
