S chram began
sending all three of
their children to
Tamakwa for the entire summer,
they decided it was time for them
to plan their own special trip. The
West Bloomfield couple headed
for places in Europe they had
never seen.
It was the first vacation for just
the two of them in 17 years.
"We miss the kids a lot, but we
feel very comfortable because the
camp owner is a good friend,"
Mrs. Schram said. "Also, grand-
parents and my sister are close
in case of an emergency, and we
leave a detailed itinerary with
everyone."
Regardless of where the
Schrams travel, they still make
sure they write regularly and
have found that the mail between
Europe and Canada is not any
slower than mail between the
United States and Canada.
Although the Schrams were
able to send all their children to
camp at the same time, other par-
ents find at least one of their chil-
dren home during the summer
months. And, those who do not
get a taste of the empty nest, said
they enjoy having one of their
children home.
When Seth Jacobson, 14, went
to Camp Moshava in Wisconsin,
parents Hedy and Bruce Jacob-
son, both working through the
summer, spent extra time with
daughter Kayla, 12, who at-
tended a theater arts day camp.
"There was a lot more 'girl
time,' " said Mrs. Jacobson, of
Southfield. "We
went to malls
and movies,
and we did

more talking than we usually do

"There also was more time
with her father, because we
planned as a threesome without
my husband going off to do guy
things with Seth."
In that environment, Mrs. Ja-
cobson, who teaches the handi-
capped, invited her daughter to
join field trips with her students
and learn more about what mom
does on the job.
Marilyn and Jim Schelberg, of
Farmington Hills, also spend
more time with a younger child,
arranging special activities for
Jonathan, 7, when David, 12, is
at Tamakwa.
"We take a lot of day trips with
Jonathan," Dr. Schelberg said.
"David had that chance in earlier
years, and he's getting too old
for the kinds of places we take
Jonathan. Most important, we
