past decade by a national Jewish
organization showed that the Jew-
ish camp experience reinforces a
child's Jewish identity better than
almost anything else, including
day and supplementary schools.
Nevertheless, some parents and
children might feel more at ease
with a so-called camp for Jews, not
a Jewish camp. In Charlevoix, Bill
and Jack Schulman own and op-
erate Camp Sea Gull, which they
describe as 90 percent Jewish.
Over the years, more and more
gentile children are attending the
sessions.
"I see camps catering to a wider
range of children these days. I
don't think we could become less
religious, because we're not at all,"
Bill says.
Sea Gull offers Humanistic ser-
vices on Friday nights. Led by dif-
ferent cabins each week, the
services focus on themes like
friendship, spirit and peace.
Bruce and Cindy Hillenberg of
Farmington Hills send their two
- daughters to Camp Tanuga. Like
Sea Gull, a majority of its children
are Jewish, but the camp is not
religious.
"I don't think I'd ever send my
kids to a Jewish (i.e. religious)
camp. To me, it's just not the real
world. The world is not all Jew-
ish," Ms. Hillenberg says.
Mr. Hillenberg explains that
he's not against religion, but feels
as though his daughters are suf-
ficiently exposed to Judaism
throughout the academic year —
via religious school and Hebrew
lessons.
Members ofTemple Kol Ami, a
Reform congregation in West
Bloomfield, the Hillenbergs believe
that Jewish values, though unar-
ticulated, nevertheless form the
basis of Tanuga activities.
Terran - Leemis, active in the
Conservative movement, says she
- doesn't look down on more secu-
lar experiences. Her daughter,
however, prefers Camp Ramah.
"I'm not speaking against oth-
er camps. I went to Sea Gull, my-
self," Ms. Leerrl is says. `There are
different camps for different peo-
ple. There are different camps for
different situations.
"Camp Ramah was something
that was right for my daughter.
She loved the* spirit. There's so
much tradition in the camp."
