Sisterhood
Torah Study

On Shabbat Va'era (Saturday,
Jan. 20), the Congregation Sis-
terhood of B'nai Moshe will pre-
sent Aviva Silverman as scholar
in residence for its Sisterhood
Shabbat. This program is open to
the community; services begin at
9 am.
Ms. Silverman will give a Ilvar
Torah titled "The Women in
Moshe Rabbenu's Life," taking off
from the Talmudic dictum that,
"For the sake of the righteous
women of that generation, Israel
was redeemed from slavery in
Egypt."
Parshat Va'era will be chanted
by Lynne Avadenka, Judith Hor-
witz, Naomi Pinchuk, Elana Roth,
and Aviva Silverman. Maftir and
Haftorah will be chanted by
Ruthellen Kass Singer. Leaders
of B'nai Moshe Sisterhood will re-
ceive bimah honors in recognition
of their work on behalf of the con-
gregation and Conservative Ju-
daism.
At the conclusion of servies
there will be a congregational kid-
dush, followed by a Luncheon for
Learners. There is a charge for
lunch, and prepaid reservations
are required.
At 1:30 p.m., following lunch,
Ms. Silverman will lead a text
study session titled "The Moon
and the Midrash" in honor of the
new Hebrew month of Shevat,
which begins Sunday night, Jan.
21. There is no charge for the af-
ternoon study session, but reser-
vations are required in order to
assure adequate seating arrange-
ments and study materials.
Ms. Silverman is an instructor
in the Florence Melton Adult
Mini-School of Metro Detroit, a
teacher and curriculum specialist
at Hillel Day School and a fre-
quent study group leader and lec-
turer at local congregations. She
is on the staff of Camp Ramah as
director for special-needs campers.
Lunch reservations must be
prepaid by Jan. 17, and cannot be
made by phone. For information,
