Not every moment of the trip
was as romantic, but everyday
was an experience.
`The Perfect Tour" actually be-
gan in the Galilee and Golan
Heights in the northern-most part
of the New Jersey-sized country.
Fed by springs and streams it is
lusher there.
Based for two days at Kibbutz
Kfar Giladi's comfortable hotel we:
hiked the Zavitan, a deep, verdant
basalt canyon (perhaps the tough-
est hike of the trip); hiked through
the Nahal Hermon Reserve in the
Banias Valley exploring caves and
waterfalls and swimming in a nat-
ural pool; invaded the ruins of
Ka'alat Nimrod, a fortress over-
looking the Hula Valley built by
Moslems in 1230; visited a Druze
village where we were treated to
hot tea and goat cheese wrapped
in pita bread during a slide show
about the Druze people.
We also downed around in
bright red rubber kayaks as we
leisurely paddled a tributary of
the Jordan River. And we stopped
at "The Good Fence" in Metulla,
a heavily fortified town on the pre-
carious Israeli-Lebanese border.
After a bus ride along the
Mediterranean, we reached Tel
Aviv where we spent the night be-
fore embarking on the Negev
Desert leg of our "Perfect Tour."
Aside from treks through Av-
dat and Shaharut, we hiked
Mitzpe Ramon, a huge nature-
carved crater in the country's gut.
We snorkeled the Coral Beach Na-
ture Reserve in Eilat, rich with
tropical fish and numerous coral
formations, and climbed all over
Solomon's Mines, 6,000-year-old
Egyptian copper mines at Timna
National Park north of Eilat.
If you go, the SPNI has three
ratings for its hikes and trips:
easy, moderate and difficult.
"The Perfect Tour" is rated
moderate, but you must be in rea-
sonably good physical condition.
The oldest in our group, a German
couple in their early 60s, were in
good shape and had no problem.
Bring a brimmed hat, sun-
glasses, sturdy hiking boots and
a daypack for carrying personal
items, food and water. (Each per-
son carried three liters of water a
day, which you're advised to drink
to prevent dehydration.) Also
bring a flashlight for cave explo-
ration, bathing suit for swimming
in waterholes, kayaking and snor-
keling, and long pants and skirts
and shoulder coverings for visit-
ing holy sites.
A passport is required. English
is spoken and the dollar accepted
almost everywhere.
