ty. In arguing that the High
Court has "crossed another red
line" by placing itself above an
elected authority (the City Coun-
cil) and appointing members of a
Religious Council by itself, Mr.
Ravitz complained that "this is
much more than judicial ac-
tivism."
Yet, observers believe that the
Orthodox parties are unlikely to
back Mr. Ravitz's idea, if only be-
cause it would deprive them of
highly coveted "political patron-
age" jobs (which pay salaries of
up to $50,000 a year) to mete out
to followers.
