fare societies in the West Bank
and Gaza, as well as being a
member of the Palestine Nation-
al Council (the parliament in ex-
ile).
Although -she is regarded as
a left-winger, she is not identified
with any of the nationalist or Is-
lamic splinter groups. Her aim,
like Mr. Arafat's, is a sovereign
state alongside Israel. Why, then,
is this quintessential Palestinian
grandmother — stocky, pugna-
cious, with her close-cropped, no-
nonsense hairdo — challenging
Mr. Palestine?
"I want to help Arafat," she
told me, "I want to help my peo-
ple. In the last stage of the peace
process, we shall be discussing
things which are vital for our
people. I want to take part in
that. I want to work with Arafat.
I want to be his right hand. He
will still be the leader of the
PLO."
So why run against him? Mrs.
Khalil does not want to repudi-
ate the Oslo agreements. She cer-
tainly does not want to give up
the dividends they have paid —
the withdrawal of Israeli troops
from the populated Palestinian

ourselves."

areas, the Palestinian flag that
flies proudly over them, the first
return of exiles. But, for her, Oslo
remains flawed.
"We say we want an indepen-
dent state," she insisted, "but this
is not independence. The peace
process is good for the Israelis,
but it is not good enough for us.
Every day they are swallowing
our land, putting walls around
us. The main thing is the land.
We must have an independent
land. We must rule ourselves."
Will the West Bank and Gaza
Strip be enough? Or does Mrs.
Khalil still yearn for the slice of
Palestine that became the Jew-
ish state in 1948?
"I will forget my father's land
for the sake of peace," she replied,
"so that we can put an end to the
situation where the earth of this
land is soaked with blood. I want
to put an end to all this, to end
war. I want to convince the Is-
raelis that war is coming, if we
don't have right and justice.
"I don't want to see war com-
ing again to my country, to see
people being killed. This is the
only way to reach peace. This is
what I want to say to the Israelis
and to the Americans. I am a
peaceful woman. I want peace for
everybody."
Samiha Khalil has a way of

getting what she wants. She may
not unseat Yassir Arafat as pres-
ident of the Palestinian Author-
ity. The Islamic fundamentalist
opposition would rather abstain
than vote for a woman. But she
will offer a focus for those main-
stream nationalists, especially on
the West Bank, who are disen-
chanted with Arafat's leadership.
And if she doesn't spur him to dri-
ve a harder bargain with Israel,
it won't be for lack of trying.

Truck Driver
Is Stabbed

Jerusalem (JTA) — An Israeli
from Ashdod was listed in mod-
erate condition after being
stabbed in the neck near the vil-
lage of AI-Jiib, northwest of
Jerusalem.
When the victim, a truck dri-
ver, stopped at a restaurant in
the village, he was attacked from
behind.
The assailant fled.
The truck driver was taken to
a hospital.
In another incident, an Israeli
was lightly wounded by glass
shards when a rock was thrown
at an ambulance in the Ramal-
lah area. Meanwhile, border po-
lice thwarted an attempted
stabbing near the Tomb of the
Patriarchs in Hebron.
Two border police apprehend-
ed a Palestinian woman, who had
approached them wielding a
knife, Israel Television reported.
Another knife was found in her
possession.

Israeli Invents
Calorie-Tracker

Jerusalem (JTA) — It is a dieter's
blessing — or nightmare: a spe-
cially programmed calculator
that keeps track of the calories
you eat.
The pocket-sized Diet Deal cal-
culator was invented by Israeli
Yaffa Golan, who said some 130
companies from 35 countries
have expressed an interest in
marketing the device.
The calculator is pre-pro-
grammed with the number of
calories found in more than 400
food products; it also keeps track
of cholesterol, sugar and protein
levels in the foods.
The user programs his or her
daily calorie allowance, and then
records every item eaten.
The calculator then keeps
track of how much more can be
eaten that day — and emits a
warning beep if the dieter goes
beyond the calorie limit.
