FINE ARTS Competition for LIFE! Vet Is Honored Fifty Years Later ALAN HITSKY ASSOCIATE EDITOR Jack Beck is proud of his accom- plishments during World War II, and his sons grew up hearing sto- ries about their father's exploits in Burma. So they, according to Mr. Beck, pushed him into ap- plying for a 50-year-old medal from the Republic of China (Tai- wan). The medal, one of 500 award- ed late last year by the Taiwan government, commemorates the efforts of Allied forces to drive the Japanese out of China during World War II. The award brought back many memories for Mr. Beck, now of West Bloomfield. MICHIGAN JEWISH AIDS COMMON MJAC is... A January 1943 graduate of Detroit's Northern High School, Mr. Beck and friend Iry Mahlin enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1943. At first Mr. Beck served in the horse calvary, but eventually was sent to join Mer- rell's Marauders in the jungles and mountains of Burma in 1945. More than 80 percent of the 3,300-man unit were killed or wounded during the war. Mr. Beck served with the Marauders for two-three months before they were disbanded and re-formed into the Mars Task Force. Mars included Chinese and Burmese soldiers. In the waning days of the war, the troops pushed the Japanese out of Burma and back into Chi- na. "It was quite a hike over the Himalaya Mountains," Mr. Beck said. Mr. Beck did not escape un- scathed. He was awarded the Purple Heart for knife wounds and a bullet that he still carries in his leg. He also was given the Bronze Star and other awards. He maintains ties with his fellow Marauders and Mars vet- erans through organizational re- unions and letters. After the war, Mr. Beck re- turned to his native Detroit and worked as a district circulation manager for the Detroit Times, News and Free Press. He now owns Base Line Metals in Detroit. He and his wife Sarah Lee have three sons and a grandchild. ❑ Michigan Jewish Aids Coalition 21550 West 12 Mile Road Southfield, Michigan 48076 (810) 356-2123 Grand Prize: $100 gift certificate from Miller's Art Supplies - Ferndale & Farmington Hills 1st Prize: $50 Miller's Art Supply gift certificate 2nd Prize: $50 U.S. Savings Bond Your School Your Age Title of your entry Medium (ink/pencil, etc.) Winning entries become the property of MJAC.
