which Jews have won Nobel and
Pulitzer prizes?

A: Since 1901, when the first

Nobel Prizes were given, about
\_, 17 percent have been award-
ed to Jews — who constitute
some 1/2 of 1 percent of the
world population.
Although Jews generally are
regarded a highly literate peo-
ple, relatively few have won the
Nobel Prize in literature. Some
who have are Isaac Bashevis
Singer, S.Y. Agnon, Saul Bel-
low, Nelly Sachs and. Henri
Bergson.
The highest number of Nobel
prizes won by Jews have been
in medicine and physics. Many
of their names are unfamiliar,
though their contributions were
of profound significance. Among
some of the more recognizable
names who have won this hon-
or: Niels Bohr, Felix Bloch,
,—c
Richard Feynman, Albert Ein-
stein and Max Born.
The first American to be
awarded a Nobel Prize was a
Jew, Albert A. Michelson, who
won in 1907 for his discovery of
the speed of light.
Although no accurate, cur-
rent figures are available, Jews
also are well-represented in
Pulitzer Prize winners, more so
than their percentage of the
American population. (The
Pulitzer Prize, of course, is an
American award.) Further-
more, the namesake of the
award, Joseph Pulitzer (1847-
1911), had a Jewish mother.
The Pulitzer Prize is award-
ed in journalism (14 categories),
literature (six categories) and
music. The first such prize for
newspaper reporting, awarded
in 1917, went to a Jew: Herbert
Bayard Swope of the New York
World.
Aside from journalism, many
Jews have won in drama,
though few in poetry.
