an overwhelming victory. The
Ayash assassination made it cer-
tain that Hamas would attempt
spectacular revenge — the cost
in Israeli blood, and the damage
to the peace process, could be con-
siderable.
Foreign Minister Ehud Barak,
military chief of staff when Ayash
began his lethal campaign three
years ago, did not acknowledge
Israel being behind the killing.
But, he said, "In the long run, it
will save lives."
Finally, even if Hamas had
agreed to a cease-fire, at some
point it would be returning to
large-scale terror. When that
happened, Yechi Ayash would
have been the key to Hamas' op-
eration. If he was not indispens-
able, he was close to it; Hamas is
much weaker without him.
As for the timing, the killing

numerous assassination at-
tempts and had murdered be-
tween 50 and 70 Israelis. He was
certain to kill again. If the op-
portunity to assassinate him pre-
sented itself, it would be hard to
justify passing it up.
As a result of the murder, an
indefinite curfew was declared on
the territories. Israelis were
barred from entering the Pales-
tinian autonomous cities. Hun-
dreds of security personnel were
deployed to check buses for ex-
plosives and look for suspicious
characters.
Mr. Barak noted that the
Palestinians also gained from
Ayash's assassination. "I'm con
vinced that the battle against ter-
ror is a common interest of the
Palestinian Authority and Is-
rael," he said.
Former Shin Bet chief Ya'acov
Peri added that if Mr. Arafat and
the PA wanted to prevent terror,
"They are able to do so, as they
have proven in recent months."
The early signs from the PA
were encouraging. But Ayash
trained many disciples. Tense
weeks loom ahead. The final re-
turns on the assassination of
"The Engineer" will not be in for
a while. ❑
