Jerusalem — Tadiran Commu-
nications and Systems has re-
ceived an order to supply $35
million worth of ground control
systems and data links for re-
motely piloted vehicles (RPVs) to
the Swiss army.
The company said it has signed
a contract with the prime con-
tractor, Oerlikon Contraves, a
Swiss company that heads a con-
sortium which will supply the
Swiss army with some 30 RPVs.
Tadiran Communications pres-
ident Benny Maidan said the firm
will also supply the Swiss Army
with digital data-link systems,
which enable RPV control and
guidance as well as video channel
transmission and telemetry.
Tadiran will also supply the
Ground System, which controls
the RPV and receives the video
images.
According to the contract, Tadi-
ran will supply the Ground Sys-
tems and Data Links to the Swiss
army over a fbur-year period and
will be responsible for engineer-
ing, production, integrated logis-
tics support and maintenance.
Tadiran President Israel Za-
mir said the company's orders are
expected to reach the record sum
of about $1.1 billion. He said this
figure is based on per-quarter or-
ders of $250 million, and includes
the current Swiss army order.

Housing Prices
Expected To Drop

Jerusalem — Housing prices in
Israel will drop by between 15
percent and 20 percent within the
next few years, a real-estate ex-
pert from the Wharton Business
School of the University of Penn-
sylvania said.
Calling the local housing mar-
ket "overheated," Professor Pe-
ter Linneman, director of the
Wharton Real Estate Center,
said Israelis will eventually rebel
against the excessively high
prices.
"People in Israel pay taxes,
buy a car and a house, and that's
it, they have no money left over,"
Professor Linneman said. "Peo-
ple don't want to live like this.
Any time such a situation has oc-
curred, the market adjusted."
Professor Linneman, who is
guest lecturing at Tel Aviv Uni-
versity during a short visit here,
compared the current state of Is-
rael's housing market to previ-
ous conditions in Tokyo, Paris,
London, Southern California and
Boston.
Although the steady immi-
gration rate of 70,000 a year will
mean continued building, Pro-
fessor Linneman said supply will
eventually exceed demand, mak-
ing the drop in prkes inevitable.
