A John By Any Other
Name Isn't As Funny

John Heffron performs at Mark Ridley's
Comedy Castle in Royal Oak.

I

f the clock reads 11:11, John
Heffron is probably making a

wish.
"Every time I do that late-
ly," the Michigan-born comedi-
an says with a little awe, "it's
come true."
Heffroh's wishes, and un-
doubtedly a large dose of talent,
have taken him far in his 25
short years: from Eastern
Michigan University student

with monthly gigs at Ann Ar-
bor's Mainstreet Comedy Show-
case to Los Angeles-based comic
with a growing following and
sitcom potential.
Heffron, who recently spent
a week as sidekick to Kevin
O'Neill on Q-95's Purtan's Peo-
ple morning show (while Dick
Purtan was on vacation), played
Detroit-area gigs while in col-
lege, spent a year in the Cay-
man Islands as a house MC,
and hit the college circuit doing
about 60 shows a semester.
Since moving to Los Ange-
les a year ago, he's shot a pilot
for USA Network and had his
debut movie role edited, uh,
out of the upcoming Eddie
Murphy film, The Nutty Pro-
fessor. But, hey, "at least I got
the part," says the South Lyon
native.
Heffron calls his style "con-
versational" and says that, de-
spite the pressure of coming up
with new material to please a
growing fan base, there's good

reason for repeating
some of his best bits:
"If you went to see
Steve Miller and he
did all new stuff,
you'd be pretty up-
set."
Having survived a
guest appearance on
"Alf" many moons
ago, comedian John
Pinette plows into
Dearborn tonight
and tomorrow on a
wave of recent suc-
cesses, including
a bevy of projects
for Fox Television
(which may soon in-
clude his own series).
You may have
caught his act on
MTV, A&E, Show-
time or various oth-
er small-screen
shows — but there John Pinette performs at Joey's Comedy Club in Dearborn.
ain't nothin' like the real thing.
