where Berlin Jews were deport-
ed — is a new and full facility
Jewish day school.
There's also a Jewish art
gallery, featuring artists from the
former Soviet Union and owned
by Nikolai Sluzki, a native of St.
Petersburg.
The focal point and catalyst for
this newly flourishing Jewish
area is the historic synagogue
and culture center. It's a magnet
which even drew President Bill
Clinton and Hillary Rodham
Clinton when they visited Ger-
many in the summer of '94.
"They were on an official tour
of Germany, and they had a spe-
cial wish to see the synagogue,"
said Dr. Chana Schuetz, who is
curator for the exhibits and for
the Institute, which was formed
to administer the synagogue.
Dr. Schuetz can reel off a
whole list of dignitaries — Ger-
man, Israeli, American — who
have visited the New Synagogue.
"In the first month, we had
50,000 visitors," she reported.
"And now we often get 5,000 vis-
itors a week. It's a top attraction
in Berlin."
But it's not only an attraction
for visitors; it is also becoming a
second Jewish center in Berlin.
The central JCC is in the west-
ern section, but the New Syna-
gogue, part of the total Jewish
community, has been the site of
concerts, lectures, special pro-
grams; many more activities are
planned.
Meanwhile, the synagogue res-
cued from ruin continues to hold
a special attraction for visitors
to Berlin, including many non-
Jewish Germans. Li

Berlin family at home — all these
and more are part of his varied
"photo album" on display.
It was tempting to linger over
the varied the varied displays.
But outside, another "exhibit"
awaited.
The New Synagogue has be-
come the focus for a renaissance
of Jewish life in what was once
the old Jewish neighborhood,
known as the Scheunenviertel.
The streets of this neighborhood
offer ample evidence of an emerg-
ing Jewish life, as I discovered
when I took a walk up and down
the nearly streets.
Next door to the synagogue, for
instance, is the Israeli-style cafe,
Cafe Oren, owned by two trans-
planted Israelis. And around the
corner is the strictly kosher Beth
Cafe, which is just across the
street from a kosher food store.
