A Good Night's Sleep...

— or anyone else — should be

beaten in the search for the truth.
Instead, I am using the tragedy
of Rabin's death to explore a
question: why are the Jewish
players in this tragedy treated
differently than are Palestinian
players in others? The obvious
answer is that the former (no
matter what the crime) are Jews
while the latter are not, and Is-
rael is a Jewish state. But obvi-
ous answers often only begin the
discussion.
In his book, The Yellow Wind,
David Grossman concluded that
the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
had reached the point where each
side saw the other's participants
not as people, but as symbols —
and symbols need not be afford-
ed the rights and treatment due
human beings. Because we can
still see the Amir family as peo-
ple like ourselves, we are willing
to recognize in them every fam-
ily's tendency to close ranks and
protect its own, no matter the
danger or the crime. That is what
families do, and Palestinian fam-
ilies are not likely to differ from

Jewish families in this regard.
Because Rabbi Rabinovich is, in
the Jewish sense, "one of us," we
assume that he is due certain
rights even in a police investiga-
tion of the most divisive crime
committed by a Jew in recent
memory. The pursuit of justice
does not mandate abusive treat-
ment of those under suspicion, a
principle that should not apply
only to rabbis.
I expect to be accused of
naivete. There will be those who
say "When you go tc Israel you
will see." I intend to go, and I will
look with open eyes. But the in-
vestigation of Rabin's murder,
and the quest for appropriate
punishment of those responsible,
show that the investigation of
even this most shocking crime
can be conducted in Israel with
due regard for human rights.
Why not apply that lesson more
broadly? LI
