digestion so slow as to neutralize any benefit. Sugar also can heighten de- pression in some people. A study of 100 clinically depressed sub- jects at the University of South Alabama found that depression vanished in 30 percent of the sub- jects when sugar was eliminated from their diet. "With these sensitive people, I can turn depression on and off like a water faucet," Professor Larry Christensen, who ran the study, told the Los Angeles Times. • Coffee: The caffeine in coffee can actually relieve depression, according to a Johns Hopkins study. And one or two cups of cof- fee in the morning can boost the mental acuity of most folks. Any more, though, may cause over- stimulation (no doubt requiring carbohydrates to calm you down. See "bagel"). • Potato latkes: Loaded with carbos, yes, "but they're fried, which can slow the rate of diges- tion," probably neutralizing any calming effect, Dr. Wurtman said. • Blintzes: "You're getting an alertness effect from the cottage cheese," Dr. Wurtman said. "And they're not very fattening, unless you start adding sour cream." • Borscht: No impact on moods. • Mogen David/Manischewitz: Any wine can dull the mind, Dr. Wurtman said. Add the sweet- ness found in kosher wine "and it's very sedating." ❑ International Physique Champion • TV Celebrity Anchor PERSONALIZED TRAINING BY PETER NIELSEN & CO, at home, office or Eye of the Tiger Health Club at 4119 Orchard Lake Road at Pontiac Trail in West Bloomfield (810) 855 - 0345 for Free Consultation Call Help Us Fight Cancer In Michigan. LU STRATI ONS BY TO M CHAU KL EY But Dr. Judith Wurtman, a nutrition scientist at the Massa- chusetts Institute of Technolo- gy and author of Managing, Your Mind & Mood Through Food, begs to differ. "Many Jews seem to think the more, the better' and that really means a lot of fat and calories, unfortunately," Dr. Wurtman said. "We sometimes miss out on the positive benefits of food be- cause there is so much fat." With the help of Dr. Wurtman, Ms. Cohen and others, here's a guide to how some traditional Jewish foods can alter our moods: • Gefilte fish: Like all fish, a source of high protein, which has been shown to make some people alert and mentally sharp. A mere three to four ounces of the stuff can raise one's mental energy. "Let's say someone is studying in the yeshiva for 10 or 12 hours and they're engaged in very in- tense, intellectual efforts which require lots of concentration and memory," Dr. Wurtman said. "It's very important that person make sure at lunch and at dinner that he has some protein." Other high-protein, low-fat sources include lean meat, liv- er, skim milk, cottage cheese and beans. • Horseradish: A natural fol- low-up to gefilte fish but, alas, it has "no effect, whatsoever" on mood, Dr. Wurtman said. • Lox: "Another protein food, but it's made-with so much oil and is so fattening that it's not the best source of protein," Dr. Wurtman said. She suggests plain smoked salmon as an alternative. • Herring: Another fatty fish, but less so than lox. "OK as brain food," the doc- tor said. • Chicken soup: Does not affect your mood, but if it makes your mother feel better, what can it hurt? • Bagels: Researchers now believe foods rich in carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta, cereal, cake or candy, don't give the quick burst of energy pre- viously attributed to them. On the contrary, they can make some people feel sluggish by boosting lev- els of serotonin, the sooth- ing brain chemical that is also activated by Prozac. • A nice coffee cake: See "bagels." Any food with added sugar can act as a sedative. Yes, the eggs in coffee cake add pro- tein, but the enormous amount of added fat makes For a FREE color brochure, call: (810) 294-1140 ItARTIARA ANN KARVIANOS CANCER INSTITUTE Fon.d..11iaig,irtCanc,r 4 • FULL FIGURED - Sizes 32 thru 52 There's nothing like the freedom • FULLER BREASTED - A thru H cup you'll feel when wearing • SHAPEWEAR - up to 6 XL AMOENA AFFINITY TM • SLEEPWEAR - up to 3 XL With its smooth contoured shape • SWIMSUITS - up to Size 32 proportioned and consumer-tested support • COVER UPS - up to 3 XL system, AMOENA AFFINITY • MATERNITY - Bras, Support Panties, is fashionable alternative to Compression pantyhose & Reenie Belts traditional breast forms. • NURSING MOTHERS - Cotton Bras with Padded Shoulder & Adjustable Cups • POST MASTECTOMY - Bras, Prostheses, Swimsuits, Lymphedema Sleeves & Pumps • HEADWEAR - Wigs, Scarves, Hats & Accessories Appointments Available Monday - Saturday in a Private and Feminine Atmosphere by Certified Fitters (810) 680-1600 3646 Rochester Rd. • Troy • Century Plaza between Big Beaver and Wattles iC ♦ 4
