A suggested make: Roc Loc by Giro. Vibrant helmet covers — made to match biking shirts — are on their way out because they generally don't fit over the newer style of headgear, which is evolving from solid and shell- like to streamlined and Swiss cheese-like for good air circula- tion. An expert cyclist and veteran of Moab (a challenging biking terrain in Utah), Mr. Levy de- scribes the feat of pushing ped- als almost as tough as his choice of accoutrements. "One of the problems, when you have all this clothing," he says "is deciding what you are going to wear." On a scale from 1 to 10, Jan Jacobs ranks the importance of fitness fashion a 7.5. More im- portant than being in style, she says, is being safe. "I'm fairly pragmatic about things," she says. "I go much more for what's going to work." Ms. Jacobs, a resident of Birmingham, owns Fit For Health, a personal fitness-train- ing company. She earned her master's in exercise physiology and stays in shape 12 months a year. One of her great loves is running, even during the cold months of winter. For winter running, there are several factors to bear in mind. First, cover all extremities, Ms. Jacobs says. Most heat is lost through the head, so it's vital to wear a hat. "One real big rule of thumb," she says, "is try to go out into the wind, so when you come back and you're sweaty, the wind is behind your back and you don't get further chilled." Whatever a person wears, he or she should keep in mind that it's OK to be somewhat cold at first. After a workout is in full swing, the tem- perature will feel at least 30 degrees warmer than the actual ther- mometer reading. As with biking, bright colors for running are hip and wise. Night run- ners shouldn't neglect a light on their hats and reflective tape on their pants, tops and shoes. Unlike ordinary fashion, styles in workout wear have developed with an eye for safety. To remain as visible as possi- ble on the road, Ms. Jacobs wears "tons of colors and pat- terns — neons, stripes, swirls, checks." Levy clothing always features the much-hailed wicking action. The second layer is made of a warm material, like fleece. And for an outer layer, Ms. Jacobs chooses a jacket that's water- proof, breathable and wind re- sistant. Gortex, she says, is warm and lightweight, but for her, it's al- most overkill. Ms. Jacobs prefers nylon, which she also wears in panels over her knees as a wind barrier. "I wear headbands, but it's probably better to wear a hat," she says. Popular among winter sports enthusiasts are "Baklavas," a hood-like garment similar to a "Gator," which folds into differ- ent shapes to cover the neck, head and ears. ❑ • Advanced Micro-graft techniques MARTIN E.
