tlement Synagogue. Of the over
300,000 Jews who live in Britain
today, more than half live in the
Greater London area.
There are many famous de-
partment stores in Longs, such
as harrods and marks and
Spencer. In the old Jewish Quar-
ter, there were many markets,
and some still function today.
There is a clothing and leather
market on Petticoat Lane (Mid-
dlesex Street) on Sunday from 9
a.m. to 2:30 p.m. A smaller mar-
ket is open on Wentworth Street
on Monday and Friday at
lunchtime. On Brick Lane there
is a lively fruit and vegetable
market on Sunday from 9 a.m. to
2 p.m.
London theater is world fa-
mous, and no trip to the great city
is complete without seeing at
least one play. Be sure to check
out the Half-Price Ticket Booth
at Leicester Square for bargains.
Yiddish theater flourished in
London for many years. Jacob
Adler, the actor/producer/direc-
tor, started in London and later
moved his company to New York.
Other famous Jewish Lon-
doners were Theodore Herzl, who

launched his Zionist Movement
in 1896 at the Jewish Working
Men's Club. A poor boy named
Barney Barnato (1852-1897)
grew up in London's Jewish ghet-
to. He emigrated to South Africa
in 1873 with about $100 in his
pocket. Twenty-two years later
he sold his company, De Beers
Consolidated Mines, for over $10-
million ...a tidy fortune in any
era.
If you want an up-to-the
minute guide to jewish London,
get a copy of the weekly newspa-
per, the Jewish Chronicle. The
newspaper also publishes "The
Jewish Travel Guide."
Non-Jewish sights to see in
London are plentiful. Watching
the changing of the guard in front
of Buckingham Palace is fun.
Portions of the palace itself are
open to visitors during August
and September. Even more en-
joyable is watching the Queen's
Horse Guard change in front of
Whitehall.
There is a guided tour of the
Tower of London which is his-
torically very interesting. The
Beefeater guides are excellent
and fun.
If you like to hoist a beer or two
in colorful surroundings, there
are wonderful pubs all over town.
In my opinion, the stories about
English food being bad are not
true. I've had many excellent
> meals in London.
Enjoy London. It is one of the
world's great cities. ❑
