The people in this ancient/ modem, busy/bustling city share a common language with us, and this can be a major plus for we mostly mono-lingual Americans. Of course, Londoners speak Eng- lish English, not American Eng- lish, but it's close enough. London is a very large city; but like most places, the best way to experience it is to walk the spe- cific areasyou are most interest- ed in. A good place to start your Jew- Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This tour is called "The Jewish East End — A Heritage Walk" and is sponsored by the East End Tourism Trust, The Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, El 6QN, London, England. Judy Goldsmith will send a free leaflet if you enclose a self-addressed envelope. If you still have energy after your walk, proceed to the London Museum ofJewish Life. This per- manent exhibition traces the his- tory ofJewish immigration and settlement in London. The mu- seum is in the Sternberg Center, 80 East End Road. You can cover this area by yourself or take a con- ducted group walk that starts at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Fri- day. You will hear about the poor, pogrom-plagued refugees that fled Europe to the safety of Lon- don. And also about the magnif- icent Rothschilds and their rise to fame and fortune. You will learn about the Jewish prime minister Benjamin Disraeli, and another celebrity, Abe Saper- stein, a Londoner who started the world-famous basketball team, the Harlem Globe Trotters. You will see where the sweatshops and the soup kitchens were. For more information about this fascinating two-hour guided walk, write London Walks, P.O. Box 1708, London NW6 1PO, England. If those time slots don't work for you, another company offers walking tours of the same Jew- ish Quarter at 10:30 a.m. on seum in Woburn House, Tavistock Square. Among the many items is an elaborately carved 16th century Italian syn- agogue ark. By this time, you will certain- ly be ready to eat a little some- thing. A good place to "fress" is Bloom's Kosher Restaurant. Come hungry because the sand- wiches and portions are huge. I haven't been there, but I'm told another good and interest- ing place to eat is the Kosher Luncheon Club on Greatorex Street. The Club is open every day from noon to 3 p.m. except for Saturdays. The specialty is fish. • Now that you've dined, you have the strength to visit the beautiful, still operating Bevis Marks Synagogue on St. Mary Axe. Completed in 1701, this is the oldest shul in Britain. Eng- lish has replaced Portuguese, but certain announcements are still made in Portuguese. Other synagogues worth visit- ing and which conduct services are Congregation of Jacob, Great Street Synagogue and the Set-
