Beth Israel also is home to a
fine Jewish museum, some peo-
ple call it the best in the South-
west. Called the Plotkin Judaica
Museum after the synagogue's
long-time rabbi, Albert Plotkin,
the collection includes travelling
exhibits and two permanent dis-
plays.
Highlights of the collection are
a 15th century Egyptian Torah
written on leather, and 17th cen-
tury German Torah breatplates.
But the museum's most un-
usual treasure is a re-created
Tunisian synagogue. Most of the
items are from a shul in Tunisia.

Tunisian family at prayer sets
the mood.
Two other synagogues worth
visiting are Temple Beth Emet
in Sun City and Temple Chai on
East Maryland in Phoenix.
Other places of interest in-
clude the Arizona Jewish His-
torical Society's Greater Phoenix
Chapter; the Jewish Communi-
ty Center, complete with educa-
tional and cultural programs;
the Arizona Jewish Theater
Company with performs at the
Sagebrush Theater in Scottsdale
and Herberger Theater in
Phoenix.
Scottsdale is home to the
Fleischer Museum of American
Modern Art, and Taliesin West,
Frank Lloyd Wright's desert
home and architecture school.
For a really different experi-
ence, visit Arcosanti, and ener-
gy-efficient town of the future
located one hour north of
Phoenix via 1-17 to Cordes Junc-
tion. The brainchild of an Ital-
ian-born Jew named Paola
Soleri, the town tries to integrate
architecture and ecology.

JNF Plans
Spring Mission

•

Participants in JNF's Jerusalem
3000 Mission to Israel will take
part in contemporary history
from May 5 to 20. A May 12-20
option also is available.
The mission will offer an in-
sider's view of Israel. Partici-
pants will meet President Ezer
Weizman, Prime Minister Shi-
mon Peres and Jerusalem May-
or Ehud Olmert, and receive
their perspectives on the peace
process.
Mission members will enjoy
two outdoor concerts, festive din-
ners, jeep ride through the Birya
Forest, a tour of the famous Grot-
tos at Rosh Hanikra, and a
chance to float in the Dead Sea.
JNF also is offering an op-
tional weekend in Eilat and an
extension to Jordan.
