hile most Detroiters were busy Monday tearing open wrapping
paper and unraveling ribbon, more than 1,000 Jewish volun-
teers were breaking the seals on paint-can lids, mopping floors,
w: leading groups in song and ladling out hot meals.
The Jewish Federation sponsored a Volunteer Extravaganza
that attracted hundreds of people looking for a worthwhile way
to spend Christmas day. The Shaarey Zedek men's club made
hot meals for Salvation Army clients. The Michigan Jewish AIDS
Coalition held a social event at the Hospice of Southeastern
gan's West Chicago Ave. facility. Acts of charity and other vol-
unteer efforts were made by many other groups and individuals,
as well.
Federation sent its volunteers to 20 area homeless shelters, hos-
pitals and homes for the aged.
Bob Mattler, who co-chaired the event with Randi Sakwa, vol-
unteered at the Fleischman Residence. "We handed out song sheets, joined in the
singing of many different tunes, and we held a bowling tournament right there in
the middle of the lobby," he said.
Mr. Mattler said the volunteer effort had its planning roots back in June and July.
It gained a great deal of momentum, though, in the past few weeks, leading up to
the holidays. Anyone who came to Federation without a prior assignment was
sent to the St. Vincent De Paul effort to sort clothing and unload truckloads of do-
nations.
