talking about decisions that im-
pact people."
JCC and Federation officials
also are examining last year's
programs and special events
and making future plans. Dur-
ing the year, task forces were
formed to consider what role
Jewish continuity, sports and
fitness, day camp and child de-
velopment will play in a re-
vamped JCC.
Center staff also spent the
year making repairs in the
health club, seeking input on
ways to improve its services,
planning for future renovations
and trying to attract new mem-
bers.
During 1995, staying abreast
of staff departures alone was a
daunting experience.
Most recently, Director of
Center Operations Chris Lewis
became the latest employee to
leave the JCC. Officially, Jan.
12 is her last day. Her position
will not be filled. -
Ms. Lewis served as cultural
arts director until five months
ago, when she was promoted to
the executive office, where she
was responsible for the business
aspects of the Center, including
maintenance and human re-
sources. She also headed up the
annual fall book fair for the last
four years. She maintains her
decision to leave was not relat-
ed to the Center's search for a
new executive director.
"I was never told to worry
about the future of my posi-
tion, but my feeling is when
new management comes in,
there are no guarantees,"
Ms. Lewis said. "I felt it was
wise to keep my options open,
and I was lucky something came
my way."
What came her way was an
opportunity to join Theresa
Fulgenzi, who recently left
her post as JCC sports and fit-
ness director. Ms. Fulgenzi will
be managing U.S. Blades in
West Bloomfield, where Ms.

Lewis will become assistant
manager.
Others who left the JCC
in the last year include market-
ing director Barbara Logan.
Her successor, Sandi Kline, re-
signed in September, after six
months on the job. A new mar-
keting director has been hired
(see story below).
Assistant Executive Director
Bruce Landgarten also left this
summer after 12 years, saying
he was ready to try something
else.

"I'm not sure
enough about what
is happening in
Detroit to talk about
it intelligently."
—Sol Greenfield

Staff members are not the
only ones leaving the JCC.
The Center lost a total of 42
health-club members during the
last six months. However, ac-
cording to Ms. Kleinfeldt, there
are more members now than
last March when figures bot-
tomed out.
Health club member Max
Weinberg notices a difference in
the number of members at the
facilities.
"Last year I used to wait in
line to use some of the health-
club equipment," he said. "Now,
there are never lines."
Some of the JCC members
using the facilities at Maple-
Drake expressed mixed reac-
tion toward the Center. Most
said they were pleased with
the services. Others expressed
concern about the direction of
the organization and the
overall appearance of the build-
ing and the condition of some
equipment.

Center Hires
Marketing Director

he Jewish Community
center of Metropolitan De-
troit has appointed Dulcie
J. Leventhal marketing di-
rector.
Formerly sales promotion as-
sistant with Crain's Detroit
Business, Ms. Leventhal will be
responsible for a comprehensive
marketing and promotional pro-
gram at the Center, and also will
oversee publicizing and adver-
tising special events.
"After a lengthy and exhaus-

tive search and meeting with
many highly qualified candi-
dates, we were excited to hire
someone of Dulcie's caliber and
expertise," said JCC Director of
Operations Chris Lewis. "Her
infectious enthusiasm will be a
welcome addition to our agency."
Ms. Leventhal, a resident of
Novi, is a graduate of Eastern
Michigan University. She is a
member of Women in Commu-
nications and the Adcraft Club
of Detroit. ❑
