THE HOLIDAYS NAY BE OVER
BUT WE'RE STILL CELEBRATING AT

he said. "But it is important to
keep it in perspective and real-
ize it was an isolated incident."
The ideas for themes, ac-
cording to Walberg, generally
come from prospective guests
who make the initial contacts.
Producers, on a case by case ba-
sis, work at verifying what
callers claim, contacting em-
ployers and/or others involved
in specific stories.
Sometimes ideas are gener-
ated by people working on the
show, and guests are solicited
with announcements of toll-free
numbers.
On the day of each program,
guests are instructed as to what
they can expect in technical op-
erations as well as questions
and are urged to make each
point concisely and quickly.
Walberg considers two sub-
jects personally taboo — Nazis
and teen suicides.
"I don't want to do anything
about Nazis, and it's not be-
cause I'm a Jew," reported the
TV host, who is active in his
New York temple and has en-
rolled his 3-year-old in its
preschool.
"It's because shows with
Nazis or skinheads or KKK
members, even with almost a
whole hour denouncing them,
still seem to get new recruits.
That's how these hate groups
thrive.
"I don't want to do a story
about teen-age suicide, al-
though it's something that
needs to be talked about. It
seems that statistics support
that more kids kill themselves
every time it's discussed on tele-
vision."
Away from TV, Walberg likes
to spend time with his family in
New York — wife Robbi; son
Morgan, 3; and daughter
Goldie, 5 months — play bas-
ketball and lend a hand to or-
ganizations that help the
homeless and victims of pedi-
atric AIDS.
"I hope people remember that
the television show is not my
life," he said. "I'm only hosting
it. Introducing stories or watch-
ing stories does not mean I am
those stories or that my audi-
ences are those stories." ❑
