To commemorate Martin Luther
King Jr.'s birthday, Temple
Emanu-El will join with the De-
troit Chapter of the American
Jewish Committee to host a spe-
cial Shabbat service on Friday,
Jan. 12.
The Reverend Norman V. Os-
borne of Bethel A.M.E. Church
in Detroit will speak at the ser-
vice on Dr. King's legacy and
black-Jewish relations.
The public is invited to the ser-
vice; their is no charge. Babysit-
ting will be provided.

By Chabad

Bais Chabad Torah center will
host a weekly lunch and learn us-
ing the Book of Tanya on Tues-
days at 12:20 at The Jewish
News. Rabbi Elimelech Silber-
berh will lead this lecture series
and will discuss fundamental
concepts of Jewish mysticism.
Chaya Sora Silberberg of Bais
Chabad Torah Center will give
a class on Tuesday night, Jan. 9,
at 8 p.m. at the Torah Center for
all mikvah users who double as
mikvah attendants. The same
class will be repeated on Tues-
day, Jan. 16, at 8 p.m. at the
Torah Center.
The International Chabad
Women's Organization mid-win-
ter convention will take place in
Toronto during the weekend of
Jan. 12-14. Chaya Sora Silber-
berg will lead a group of women
to Toronto to participate in this
weekend.

Brotherhood
Hosts Rockers

Temple Beth El Brotherhood will
host its annual sports night Mon-
day evening Jan. 15, at 6 p.m.
The event will feature food, fun
and prizes for family members of
all ages plus gifts for every child
in attendance.

On hand to entertain will be
Brian "The Goose" Finnerty and
several of his Detroit Rocker
teammates. Beth El members
and guests also will get the op-
portunity to see the Rockers do
battle with the Tampa Bay Ter-
ror at Beth El Night at the Cobo
Arena, Jan. 27. Special tickets for
the event, which include treats
and a program will be on sale at
Sports Night.

Free Concert
At Library

The Oak Park Arts and Cultur-
al Commission will present Can-
tor David Gutman in a free
concert, Sunday, Jan. 7, from
7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Oak Park
Library. Cantor Gutman will sing
a variety of songs, including light
opera, Broadway, Yiddish, He-
brew, Russian and English lan-
guage favorites.
Zina Astrakhan will accompa-
ny Cantor Gutman on piano. Join-
ing in this program are Sidney
Mann, violinist, and Ishok Pripu-
pets, a Russian accordionist.

Seminar Set
For Accountants

B'nai B'rith Accountants Unit
will hold its monthly seminar on
Wednesday, Jan. 3, 6-9 p.m. at
the Maple-Drake Jewish Com-
munity Center.
Speaking will be Frank T. Ma-
mat ; from Clark, Klein, Beau-
mont, PLC. His topic will be
"Labor and employment pitfalls
in 1996." Members and prospec-

Self-Defense
Program Starts

Temple Kol Ami will present
Chazak Ve'ematz (Be Strong and
Courageous), a three-part Jew-
ish self-defense program for Tem-
ple Kol Ami students ages 12-14
and their parents. This experi-
ence will include lessons in how
to defend yourself emotionally
and physically and an exploration
of the Jewish foundations of
courage and self-esteem.
The program will occur on
Mondays, Jan. 8, 15, and 22 from
6:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Temple
Kol Ami. An optional dinner will
be served at 6:15 p.m. This is a
free family program co-sponsored
by Jewish Experiences for Fam-
ilies (JEFF), a division of the
Agency for Jewish Education.
