The "PaineWebber Collection of Contemporary Masters" exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts runs through Dec. 31. Among the Jewish artists featured are Lu- cien Freud and Roy Lichten- stein. And perhaps the power of art was best expressed in the shared project of two artists and longtime friends, sculptor Arthur Schnei- der of Franklin Village and film- maker Harvey Ovshinksy of Grosse Pointe. Distinct in person- ality and approaches to their re- spective art, Schneider and Ovshinsky found common ground on a documentary about their co- authorship of a children's book of questions. To paraphrase Schneider, who spoke about the sacredness of be- ing an artist: Art is about finding the right gesture for the right time and space. These are just a few of the artists who found the right gesture during 1995.
