and indeed the artist him-

I was going to be a painter."
He was born in Russia, then
immigrated in 1912 with his fam-

years later, together with Mark

was part of "The Ten," a group of
modern painters working in di-

erusalem: An Archaeo-
logical Biography (Ran-
dom House), by Hershel
Shanks, is a beautiful book
that should intrigue even the
most disinterested student of ar-
chaeology.
Written by the founder and ed-
itor of Biblical Archaeology Re-
view and Bible Review, the work
reads like a tour of Jerusalem's
past, focusing on critical histori-
cal and religious events. Filled
with excellent photos and useful
maps, the book clears up popu-
lar, though mistaken, notions
(the Garden of Gethsemane,
where Judas betrayed Jesus, was
a cave; not a garden) and raises
mysteries of its own.
In Chapter 3, Mr. Shanks goes
in search ofMetsudat Tsion, the
Fortress of Zion, described in the
Bible as a structure built by the
occupying Canaanites at the time
of King David.
"Is there any chance that ar-
chaeologists have uncovered the
Fortress of Zion?" Mr. Shanks
asks. "Surprisingly, the answer
is yes, although, as usual, cer-
tainty eludes us."
The discovery was made in the
1920s by an Irish archaeologist
named R.A.S. Macalister. He un-
covered what he called the
Stepped-Stone Structure, a five-
story high tower built around the
14th century BCE.
This likely was the structure
David had to overcome before he
conquered Jerusalem. He then
began much construction of his
own, including a palace, and he
bought land he hoped would

Trust us. There's more excitement in this new book from Schocken than any

episode of "All My Children."

Unlike many modern trans-
lations, which bend over back-
ward to make the Bible more
palatable to contemporary read-
ers ("Hey man," one of the Jews
said. "Like, how much longer are
we going to have to do this wan-
dering in the desert thing? I've
got to get home to see '90210!' "),
this version aims, instead, to
recreate the poetry of the origi-
nal. When Abraham brings his
son as a sacrifice to God, for ex-
ample, the Fox translation is
slow and dramatic:
Pray take your son,
your only one,
whom. you love,
Yitzhak.
The work also features trans-
lations of names, often vital to an
understanding of the text, and
considers significant words that
appear throughout the Bible.

in the Whitney, Yale Uni-
versity Museum and the
British Museum, among
others.
His early works are dark
and revealing, often focus-
ing on street scenes. Later,
Mr. Solman's haunting por-
traits show character
through disinterested, or
brooding, or lonely eyes.
Nostalgia is a key word
in his many of his works,
capturing "bits of city life
now gone — like the ice cel-
lar with an honor-system
sign-up sheet for cus-
tomers," critic Jo Ann Lewis
wrote in The Washington.
Post. "Yet, almost miracu-
lously, none of these works
has become in any way 'dat- Archaeologists in Israel at a discovery in the

any work of art."

N. BENAMI/ME DIA

I magine this collection of char-
acters:
*A young man sold into
slavery by his brothers who
becomes, thanks to his remark-
able ability to interpret dreams,
a top aide to the head of Egypt.
*A man who sets sail in a mas-
sive ship while the Earth is cov-
ered with water.
*A woman who weds her sis-
ter's true love.
And you thought soap operas
offered enticing drama.
You'll find the exciting stories
of Joseph, Noah and Leah — and
more! (that's right — this is just
the start of it) — in The Five
Books of Moses (Schocken), a
new translation with introduc-
tions, commentary and notes by
Everett Fox.
