But it can be 'said that Mama
Stella Locricchio's pastas rank
among the best ... People come
from everywhere because of their
freshness, ingenious together-
ness and delicate taste.
She has all the modern equip-
ment needed, but still uses her
hands to mix the dough and bal-
ance it out ... Her gnocchi di
palomino, Arriva's light potato
dumplings with palomino sauce,
are choice ($13.95).
And mama doesn't stop here
... She also makes the meatballs,
raviolis, spidini and so many oth-
er goodies ... Her Grandma's
Cookies are noted by huge
throngs of people.
There are always at least five
fresh fishes on the Arriva menu,
along with six meats and five
poultry dishes ... All are reason-
ably priced and served with soup
or salad, pasta, vegetable and
bread basket.
Over a million people have
passed through the doors at Ar-
riva since it opened in 1991 ... It
serves about 2,500 a week.
Kitchen hours are Monday-
Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.;
Friday, 11 a.m. to midnight; Sat-
urday, 5 p.m. to midnight ... Ex-
cept for parties, it is closed
Sundays ... Arriva does a large
job on bar and bat mitzvahs, wed-
dings, showers, etc.
Seating at Arriva is 180 for
fine dining in two rooms up-
stairs; 140 in its downstairs jazz
room; 60 in a downstairs ban-
quet room, and over 200 in the
Rainbow show room.
It is among the prettiest spots
on the east side ... The original
Schmid Haus had been com-
pletely gutted and transformed
into a thing of much beauty ...
White linen tablecloths, white
linen napkins, cherrywood every-
where in an ambiance of excit-
ing loveliness, full mirrors,
marble fireplace, marble inlaid
floor ... Downstairs, the walls are
covered with pictures of celebri-
ties and personalities.
Arriva is one business where
people love to phone, hoping they
will be put on hold ... No hard-
selling commercials, no hopped-
up radio stations ... Just some
very fine singing by Sam and
Sandra ... "Whoopee" or "Every-
thing Happens To Me" or "Un-
forgettable" or "Teach Me
Tonight," etc. ... Some people get
so enchanted with their vocaliz-
ing, they forget about being on
hold ... It wouldn't be uncommon
to hear someone say; "Not yet,
I haven't heard them finish."
The togetherness of good food
and wonderful name entertain-
ment is something too long in
returning ... Thankfully, the
combination has been done by a
restaurateur and entertainer.
Arriva's Italian food is attrac-
tive in its own right... thanks.to
people like Mama Stella Locric-
chio and others in the kitchen.
And while you're at it, give

thanks for 1-696, too ... That link
between the east side and west
side is the reason why so many
people can enjoy the likes of
places like Arriva.
SINCE IT OPENED in Jan-
uary 1989, Ritz-Carlton Dear-
born has had the Mel Ball
Entertainment Agency as its ex-
clusive music directorial group ...
Mel and Colours were featured
entertainers in the Ritz's Presi-
dential Ballroom last year ... and
the sellout has brought them
back again to ring in 1996 ... Mel
started the agency in 1976 with
only his own band ... and today
books 20 orchestras plus being a
full-service operation.
IT DOESN'T COME much
better than this ... with Brian
Polcyn and Certified Master
Chefs Milos Cihelka and Ed
Janos together in putting on a
one-day seminar ... Date is Jan.
14, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the
Five Lakes Grill on Main Street
in Milford ... They'll give tech-
niques, recipes and culinary tips
for all levels of cooks and chefs
... Complete seminar is $150 ...
Contact Ed Janos, (810) 684-
7455 ... Credit cards will be ac-
cepted.
COCO'S KORNER ... "Dear
humans. If you have pets, we
like to stay inside with you on
cold winter days. But if your pet
has to be outside part of the day,
please do like our friends at the
Michigan Humane Society say.
Check our drinking water often.
We can't drink frozen water.
"Please make sure the dog-
house is secure and doesn't leak.
Put the doghouse doorway to-
ward the southeast and put a
flap over it. Feed us a little more
food. When the temperature or
wind-chill falls to 15 degrees or
below, move us to a warmer
area.
"We indoor pets need a little
extra attention too. Don't keep
us outside more than 10 min-
utes. Give us short-haired pets
a sweater for outdoor trips. Trim
hair from the bottom of our feet
so ice and snow won't stick to
them so easily. And most of all,
please, please wipe our feet when
we come in from a walk because
salt and other stuff used to melt
snow and ice can irritate our
paws. Thanks bunches and a lot
of extra licks. We love you."
REGARDLESS of the con-
struction going on to make
Crosswinds Mall on Orchard
Lake Road into an open-air shop-
ping center again, there is still
parking in front for places like
Hoa Kow of West Bloomfield ...
A little inconvenient, but Hoa
Kow, especially with its many
varieties of whitefish, is worth
the extra steps.
OLDIE BUT GOODIE ...
lady to a beggar, "Aren't you
ashamed of yourself to stand
here begging on the street?" ...
Beggar: "What do yod want,
lady, I should open an office?" 0
