left an indelible mark on Allen.
"That's the sort of lack of pre-
tension that makes (Panter's)
work appreciated at face value,"
said Allen. "His work isn't stand-
offish. To understand his work, it
just takes someone who appre-
ciates his humor."
Unfortunately, if you haven't
spent time reading Jimbo or
watching "Pee Wee's Playhouse,"
the show for which Panter re-
ceived three Emmy awards for
his set designs, the imagery
seems rather strange — imper-
sonal, drawn in a minimalist style
and stacked with images — as if
induced by an anxiety attack.
It may also explain why
Panter is well-suited for his
current assignment as con-
tributing artist to the off-beat, but
poignant FOX-TV show, "The
Simpsons."
Perhaps working on a popular
TV show is the modern-day ver-
sion of having an opening at a
pregtigious gallery. If that's the
case, the rock 'n' roll posters of
artist Derek Hess belong in the
Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Hess' work captures the angst
and peculiarity of today's rock
performers including Pearl Jam,
Nine Inch Nails, Afghan Whigs
and White Zombie. This past
year, Hess' work has appeared in
Spin and Newsweek , and he also
designed the poster announcing
the opening of the Rock 'n' Roll
Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

"We've had a lot of alternative
rock fans come in and really
appreciate the pen and ink
drawings that were drafts for
the posters," said Allen, who
arranged the silkscreen posters
alongside the early drawings.
Stephanoff, 24, and Allen, 25,
who are two of the youngest
gallery owners in the area, are
well aware that a gallery must ul-
timately appeal to its clientele in
order to stay in business. When
they're not putting in 40 hours a
week at the Cement Space, they
each hold part-time jobs. And
when they're not working in fab-
rication design or delivering piz-
zas, they somehow find time to
work on their own art.
Of course, no one said that
creating and showing pieces
that reflect an "art-as-entertain-
ment" theme wouldn't be a lot of
work. ❑

Crowd Control will be on
exhibit at the Cement Space
through December 29. The Ce-
ment Space is located at 1501
E. Woodbridge in Detroit. For
