Back in Toronto, they rented
four-track tape recorders and
began writing humorous songs,
"trying to make each other
laugh." Others shared their hu-
mor; the comedy troupe Corky
& the Juice Pigs took the fledg-
ling duo on tour as its opening
act. Upon returning home, they
recruited brothers Jeff and An-
drew Creeggan to play bass and
keyboards, respectively, and
they met drummer Tyler Stew-
art at a festival for street per-
formers.
The quintet hung together
until earlier this year, when An-
drew Creeggan bowed out, a
move-Page said the keyboardist
had been considering for awhile.
"He just wasn't into the life
on the road," Page says. "I don't
think rock 'n' roll music is his
thing. I think he'd rather be do-
ing stuff in the jazz world. I
think he feels like he missed out
on stuff, too, like going to uni-
versity."
The other Ladies have taken
some time to catch up on life,
too. Robertson and his wife had
their first child, a girl, about a
month ago. Page, meanwhile,
says he's become reacquaint-
ed with Judaism since marry-
ing two years ago; his wife isn't
Jewish, but, he says, "we've
built a fairly observant Jewish
household."
That doesn't mean the Ladies
won't take a good gig on a High
Holiday, though. Last year they
played on Yom Kippur in Los
Angeles, sparking angry phone
calls from Page's mother, and
from good friend Jay Moses of
Southfield, who's studying in Is-
rael to be a rabbi.
The Ladies wound up with a
backstage VIP that night —
"Beverly Hills 90210" star Ja-
son Priestly.
"He (Priestly) was pretty
friendly," says Page. He said,
`Hey man, next time maybe we
should go out for drinks.' It was
so show biz. I said, 'Why don't
we go out for dinner.' He said,
`OK. Don't push it.' "
