Elie Wiesel
Supports Clinton

Washington (JTA) — Holocaust
survivor and Nobel Peace Prize
laureate Elie Wiesel joined Pres-
ident Clinton to support the de-
ployment of U.S. peacekeeping
troops to Bosnia.
Mr. Wiesel, who had long
urged the world to stop the atroc-
ities in Bosnia, called the peace-
keeping roll "an act of morality"
that "will be remembered in his-
tory."
"It is with a great sense of
pride and pleasure that I came
to support your decision," Mr.
Wiesel said after meeting with
Mr. Clinton in the Oval Office. "I
believe it is right; I believe it is
honorable."
Two years ago at the opening
of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial
Museum, Mr. Wiesel made an
impassioned plea to Mr. Clinton
to help put an end to the mas-
sacre in the former Yugoslavia.
The first of 20,000 American
troops began arriving in Bosnia
to enforce the Balkan peace
agreement.

Argentine Center
May Sue Priest

Buenos Aires (JTA) — The Ar-
gentine office of the Simon
Wiesenthal Center is consider-
ing suing a local priest who de-
nied the Holocaust.
The Catholic priest, 68-year-
old Manuel Quintas Barreiro,
teaches ethics and philosophy in
the small town of Pinto, in San-
tiago del Estero, a province in
northwestern Argentina.
In a television interview in
which he was introduced as "the
Nazi padre," Father Quintas
called Hitler "one of the greatest
statesmen in human history" and
said Nazism was "good for Ger-
many at that historical moment."
Asked by his interviewer about
the Holocaust, Father Quintas
said he doubted that it existed.
"Don't you think that claiming
that 6 million died is a bit too
much?" said the priest.
Father Quintas also said the
July 1994 AMIA bombing that
took 86 lives in Buenos Aires was
"something terrible, but not as
bad as the suffering inflicted on
the Arab peoples by Israel."
The Simon Wiesenthal repre-
sentative in Argentina, Sergio
Widder, said the center would
complain to the Santiago del Es-
tero bishop and to the archbish-
op of Argentina and ask that the
priest "be disciplined."
Mr. Widder said the center is
looking into suing Father Quin-
tas under the 1993 anti-discrim-
ination law, which forbids
distribution of racist and anti-Se-
mitic messages in any form. .
