much that some pro-Israel ac-
tivists worried that the Israelis
had expended valuable political
capital to provide Mr. Peres with
the high-profile podium.
But there was no doubting the
Israeli leader won a strong re-
ception from the harried legisla-
tors and the guests in the gallery
— many of whom were in tears.
"It was a stunning reaction,"
said Tommy Baer, president of
B'nai B'rith. "It was a very strong
and clear expression of support
for the relationship between Is-
rael and the United States, as
well as for the peace process."

Indications are
discussions with
Syria could resume
after the Secretary of
State's trip to the
region.

"It was an impressive speech,"
said Rep. Ben Cardin, D-Md. "He
very clearly highlighted his corn-
mitment to peace."
Mr. Peres also spoke briefly to
the more than 200 delegates as-
sembled for a "peace process ad-
vocacy day," organized by the
National Jewish Community Re-
lations Advisory Council
(NJCRAC) and the American Is-
rael Public Affairs Committee
(AIPAC), with support from the
Conference of Presidents of Ma-
jor American Jewish Organiza-
tions.
Controversy accompanied the
NJCRAC event because of at-
tempts to blunt its message of
support for the current peace
process, and focus instead on the
general quest for peace.
"It was made explicitly clear
throughout the day that this was
an expression of support for this
peace process," said Gail Press-
berg, Washington director of
Americans for Peace Now. "The
fact that there were several hun-
dred people on Capitol Hill, lob-
bying in support of the Israeli
government's policies, sent a very
loud message to legislators."
Mr. Peres, in addressing the
group, repeated his call for a re-
duction in the level of rhetoric in
the debate over his government's
policies, and offered a strong de-
- fense of American aid to the
Palestinian Authority — the ob-
ject of much of that rancor with-
in the Jewish community.
The NJCRAC group also heard
an impassioned analysis by
House
Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga.,
of the growing danger of interna-
tional terrorism — the most seri-
ous challenge facing the
international community since
the end of the Cold War, he told
the group. El
