production schedule is exacting.
Three or four months prior to
recording, the partners must buy
the audio rights to a book,
abridge it and audition readers
who can bring the book to life.
Then it's into the studio to record,
followed by sessions with a
graphic artist to design the cas-
sette's package. The packager
gets the tape and design and
sends the finished product to a
duplicator.
Listen & Live starts out with
2,500 units, which are distrib-
uted through bookstores, cata-
logues and, recently, through
audio book clubs.
Their audiocassette on the
University of Wisconsin's Rose
Bowl win in 1993 was so popu-
lar, however, that they did a sec-
ond run of 2,500.
"There's a lot of competition
on a lot of different levels: big au-
> dio publishers like Time and
Warner, Simon and Schuster
and a bunch of niche players,
which is how we define our-
selves. Some people just do ro-
mance novels or Westerns or
self-help,” Ms. Weberman said.
The packaging is slick and the
readers are carefully chosen for
their ability to bring out the
essence of the text — other at-
tributes that separate them from
the pack, she added.
The partners are concentrat-
ing on building up direct and cat-
alogue sales, believing there's an
untapped market out there. They
just issued their first holiday cat-
alogue.
Listen & Live releases are
available in area bookstores, like
Talking Book World in West
Bloomfield and Borders in Ann
Arbor, and range in price from
$4.95 to $14.95 for two-cassette
books on tape.
