She said the society assisted
13,000 families last year and
close to 20,000 this year, serving
an average of 200 families daily
who need clothes and household
goods, along with holiday pre-
sents they can give to their fam-
ilies.
Donations have poured in
since the fire, she said.
"I can't believe how generous
people are being," Ms. We-
grzynowicz said.
St. Vincent De Paul is an in-
dependent charity group that re-
ceives no public funding. The
resale of donated goods helps
send children to two summer
camps, supports a food depot and
scholarship programs, and pays
for job training for the homeless.
The fire claimed items that rep-
resented 50 percent of the soci-
ety's revenue.
At Temple Israel, Hillel Day
School, Congregation Beth
Shalom and Congregation B'nai
Moshe, collection drives got un-
der way almost immediately. All
area temples and synagogues
received a fax Monday from the
Jewish Community Council
asking them to launch emer-
gency clothing drives and call-
ing on people willing to answer
phones at St. Vincent during the
week.
"Our hearts go out to those
people in need," said David Gad-
Harf, executive director of the
Jewish Community Council.
"The other especially poignant
part of it for Jews is it coincides
with the beginning of Chanukah,
and it's traditional for Jews to
give tzedakah at the beginning
of Jewish holidays."
Beverly Yost, the JCC's coor-
dinator of outreach and commu-
nications, said she lined up four
volunteers Tuesday to help field
the flood of calls coming in to St.
Vincent.
"Whenever you see it on the
news, it's always framed in terms
of Christmas giving and Christ-
mas charity, and maybe a lot of
Jewish people don't think they
have anything to do with it. In
some way, people understand it
has something to do with all of
us," she said.
Eva Shapiro, executive direc-
tor of Temple Israel, said a fli-
er asking for donations was
handed out to temple members
at a Chanukah lunch and
klezmer concert on Sunday.
Temple Israel planned to deliv-
er all donated goods to St. Vin-
cent De Paul.
Donations can also be dropped
off at WXYZ-TV Channel 7;
WDIV-TV Channel 4; WJBK-TV
Channel 2; or St. Vincent's 16
drop-off sites listed in the white
pages. Mail monetary donations
to: St. Viwent De Paul Society,
