"Isn't it funny how it is always the rich and famous who seem to get honorary degrees and recog- nition?" he said. He wanted to pro- duce something in which average people — he considers himself an average person — can participate. "This must be for all people to come and show their alliance, and how they feel toward the city of Jerusalem. Everyone must have the right to come forward, put his name down and become part of it." Having owned a textile facto- ry in South Africa, Mr. Proos came to Israel not wishing to see another piece of cloth all his life. "Three days after having made aliyah I went down to the beach, and a kid of about 7 came up to me to ask the time in Hebrew. I couldn't understand if he want- ed money for an ice cream or was asking me to help him find his mother." He recalled becoming some- what panicky, and decided that learning a new language and changing his career simultane- ously might prove too drastic. So he ran back to what he knew best and opened a textile plant. (He has since sold out his interests in the business after deciding to commit himself full time to the scroll project.) The scroll was first presented to the public last September at the Knesset, under the auspices of Jerusalem 3000. Prime Min- ister Yitzhak Rabin attended the event, as did Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Ohnert. Ms. Kirsch and Mr. Proos hope to have as many as 2 million tourists and 5 million Israelis put pen to the parchment. "The more successful the project is, the more good that will come out of it as we will be able to increase our gifts and donations to charities," Mr. Proos said. Although organizers have yet to compile statistics, foreign vis- itors have exceeded the number of Israelis signing. The Jerusalem 3000 Scroll has re- ceived a great deal of support during the Pentecostal Feast and the Feast of the Tabernacles. "It was a special day when 800 pilgrims from Nigeria lined up to sign," Mr. Proos said. Ms. Kirsch recalled one Brazil- ian Pentecostal tour leader be- ing so enthusiastic that he wrote in the names of all his group. "People have been writing all kinds of messages on the scroll, expressing their love for Jerusalem," she said. "Just about every country in the world is rep- resented in every kind of lan- guage." But will the Jerusalem 3000 erroll 1rX1_1z_n_n_rlicr_cmcs "When people sign and read this declaration, maybe they can just stop and something may happen," Ms. Kirsch said. "It doesn't have to change any- thing as such," Mr. Proos added. "Let's take the politics out of it. This is the time to say, 'I love Jerusalem.' Full stop." Signing points for the Jerusalem 3000 Scroll are at the International Convention Cen- tre, Binyaney Ha'ooma, City Hall in Safra Square, the Cardo in the Old City, Holyland Model, Bible Lands Museum, Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza Hotel, Laromme Hotel, Hyatt Regency Hotel, Jerusalem Paradise Hotel and the Shalom Hotel.
