ing to the study.
In addition, the percentage of
Jews older than 65 years is close
to twice the national average, ac-
cording to the data. The report
said found that "Jews tend to
marry later," "are more likely to
marry" and "are less likely to be
separated" than non-Jews.
Australian Jewish men and
women are better educated than
their non-Jewish counterparts,
the report also said.
And in terms of family income,
21.2 percent of all Jewish fami-
lies earned $60,000 in 1991, com-
pared with 6.1 percent of all
Australian families, the study
found.
"The report suggests that Ju-
daism is likely to continue as a
strong force in Australia, partly
because of the large percentage
of Jews sending their children to
Jewish day schools," Mr. Bolkus
also said.
In addition, the report showed
that 9.8 percent of the spouses of
Jewish respondents declared
themselves members of other re-
ligions, a finding significantly
lower than most communal esti-
mates.

ADL Urges
Condemnation

New York (JTA) — The Anti-
Defamation League has called on
the Turkish government to issue
a public condemnation of the
shooting death of a Jewish busi-
nessman in Turkey.
An anonymous caller report-
edly told Turkish security forces
that the killing of Nesim Malki
in Bursa, Turkey, was in retali-
ation for last month's slaying in
Malta of Dr. Fathi Shakaki, the
leader of the fundamentalist Is-
lamic Jihad movement.
Islamic Jihad leaders have
blamed Dr. Shakaki's death on
Israel — a claim Israeli leaders
have neither confirmed nor de-
nied.
Mr. Malki was reportedly
gunned down by three gunmen
who opened fire on his car in the
western Turkish city.
Mr. Malki's killing was the sec-
ond attack on Jews in recent
months.
In June, a militant Islamic
group claimed responsibility for
a car bomb attack that injured
the leader of the Jewish commu-
nity in the capital of Ankara.
Mr. Malki's murder prompted
the ADL to write a letter to
Turkey's ambassador to the Unit-
ed States, Nuzhet Kandemir,
calling on Turkey to investigate
the attack and to beef up securi-
ty for the country's Jewish com-
munity.
There are an estimated 25,000
Jews living in Turkey, a secular
