The Honey Berris Men's Bas-
ketball League at the Maple-
Drake Jewish Community
Center is halfway through the
fall season and seeking addi-
tional teams for its winter
league.
The league plays Wednesday
evenings. For information, call

Through the first half of the
season, captain Larry Carney's
team has a 5-1 record. Rick
Burkhardt is the leading scorer.
They are followed by Joe James'
team, 3-2, (Dave James leading
scorer); Marty Wolfe 3-3 (Marty
Wolfe); Tony Sanders 2-4 (Ray
Keiser); and Jerry Bass 0-5 (Dr.
Rick Stober).

Abielle Schwarzberg, a former
athlete at Berkley High School,
was mentioned in Sports Illus-
trated Nov. 27 in an article on
California State-Bakersfield's
women's wrestling team.

Michael C. Applebaum was elect-
ed president of the Michigan Jew-
ish Sports Hall of Fame at the
December meeting of its board of
governors.

Abi Schwarzberg

Schwarzberg was runner-up
in 1994 to Okemos' Lauren Wolfe
in both the United States na-
tional and world team trials TAst
February she placed first in the
Michigan International Open
Championships, and in June was
runner-up in the Women's
Freestyle World Team trials in
Oklahoma.
Schwarzberg is a biology ma-
jor at Cal State-Bakersfield and
wrestles in the 143-pound class.

Mr. Applebaum, a certified
public accountant, has been a
board member for six years. He
has been treasurer of the orga-
nization since 1990 and chaired
the annual Michigan Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame induction
banquet in 1994.
Also elected were vice presi-
dents Hi Dorfman, Dr. Stuart
Kirschenbaum and Nate Pollack,
secretary Steve Simons, trea-
surer Howard J. Gourwitz, and
board members Richard Rott and
David Techner.
Governors whose terms carry
over through 1996 include Bill
Berris, Leonard Brose, Arthur
Horwitz, Charles Rothstein, Al-
lan Schecter, Steve Stein, Fred
Steinhardt, Sydney Weinstein,
Shirley Foon Wiss and Pete
Yura.

Sarah Mae Stevens, 13, won gold
medals in freestyle, compulsory
and interpretive ice skating Dec.
3 at the Wayne (Mich.) Open
Competition.
Stevens is a member of the De-
troit Skate Club and the Birm-
ingham Figure Skating Club, and
is a student at Derby Middle
School in Birmingham and Con-
gregation Shir Tikvah in Troy.
