Happy
Chanukah
From Our

To Yours

hanukah marks the freedom of the Jews of Palestine
from the oppression of Antiochus Epiphanes in the
second century B,C.E.. Antiochus believed that he
was G-d, and was angry when the Jewish;people refused to
worship him or accept is heath en practices, He prohibited
the observance'sacred eWispr ices

cision, Temple'R,itual lia bat observance, and the study of
the Torah. King Antiochus

armies were defeated an
and the Teni e was cleansed

rededicated. Chanukah means "rededication". Had the Jew-
ish people been snuffed out by Antithus, not only would Ju-

Lets Play Dreidell!

To play dreidel, each player must have some candy, nuts or
coins.
To start the game everyone niust put something in the kitty.
Players take turns spinning The dreidel. If it lands on:

NUN - means nothing. You win nothing,
you lose nothing.
MEL - means Belt. The player takes all.
HAY - means halt The player gets half of
everything in The kitty.
SHIN or Pay - means pay. The player adds
to the kftty.
According to legend the Chanukah dreidel was invented dur-
ing the lime of The fvlaccabees. Antiochus forbade The study
of Torah. Nevertheless, people gathered in small groups and
studied the Torah secretly and by heart If soldiers ap-
proached, The students spun the top. When the enemy ar-
rived, all he could see was Jews playing an innocent game.
The dreidel saved many lives.
