world. Jewish delegations from
more than 50 countries compete
in 32 sports. Ice hockey has been
added for the first time. Jordan
Weinstein, the national chair for
the U.S. Maccabiah Team for
open sports, said hockey had nev-
er been proposed until the Cana-
dian delegation made the
suggestion last May.
"Canada felt they had a lot of
support in their Jewish commu-
nity to send a hockey team," said
Mr. Weinstein of Worcester,
Mass.
Delegations from the former
Soviet Union and Israel em-
braced the idea and, because four
countries must participate for the
sport to be official, the United
States would be the deciding fac-
tor.
For other delegations, the cost
would be prohibitive, according
to Mr. Wein-
stein.
"Part of my
job is to find
leadership for
each sport," Mr.
Weinstein said.
"Before saying
yes or no to a
hockey team, it
had to be deter-
mined if there
was sufficient
leadership to or-
ganize such a
team."
When Mr.
Weinstein heard
the name Sam
Greenblatt from
his counterpart
in Canada, he
placed a call to
Southfield.
Mr. Green-
blatt recently be-
gan fund-raising and is focused
on collecting the $250,000 nec-
essary to take 23 players and
team personnel to Israel.
In an attempt to recruit the
best possible players, Mr. Green-
blatt will orchestrate tryouts dur-
ing 1996. A schedule has not
been determined, but Mr. Green-
blatt plans to screen players in
the metro-Detroit area, New
England, Buffalo, New York City,
Chicago and the West Coast. He
is also looking for a coaching staff.
Mr. Greenblatt is not the only
Detroiter involved in the 1997
Maccabiah Games. Also holding
chairmanships are Joel Jacob,
rowing co-chair; Alan and Lori
Horowitz, co-chairs for the U.S.
juniors tennis team; and Jay
Robinson, chair of the U.S. Ju-
nior Division. El

Sam Greenblatt:
Seeking players.
However, he was told ice hockey
wasn't a sport for Jewish boys.
Now, with the help of his co-
chair, Ilene Kent, who works in
merchandising and marketing
for the National Hockey League
in-New York, he will put togeth-
er a Jewish team to participate
in world competition during the
1997 Maccabiah Games.
Mr. Greenblatt has already re-
ceived a commitment from one
player, former New York Is-
lander Mike Hartman.
"We're looking for the best
Jewish athletes," said Mr. Green-
blatt, a longtime acquaintance of
Mr. Hartman, a former Detroi-
ter.
The Maccabiah Games are
held in Israel every four years,
one year after the su Timer
Olympics. They are the third-
largest athletic event in the

who helped bring the Oak
Park Hockey Association
into existence 24 years ago,
faces a new hockey challenge.
The Southfield resident was
officially appointed ice hockey co-
chairman of the United States
Maccabiah Team last month. He
must now help put together and
fund a team for the 1997 games
in Israel.
"This is like a dream come true
for me," said Mr. Greenblatt, who
is involved in special projects
with USA Hockey, the governing
body for amateur hockey in the
United States.
More than two decades ago,
Mr. Greenblatt, who devoted a
majority of his life to the game,
dreamed of a local Jewish hock-
ey team and envisioned jerseys
embellished with a menorah.
