A ZI INI rigs Irving M. Hermelin, A Pioneer At Heart Irving M. Hermelin, 99, of Southfield, died Dec. 9. Mr. Hermelin left his home in Poland at a young age with a goal to be a pioneer in Pales- tine. He, however, became enamored by Ameri- ca when visitng in the 1920s. He established the Irving M. Hermelin Insurance Agency in 1925. He helped form literary, theater and political groups and supported such organiza- tions as Boys Town Jerusalem and Israeli charities, the NAACP and Michigan Cancer Foundation. In 1979, the Jewish Teholog- ical Seminary of America gave the Hermelins its National Award for Community Service, and the State of Israel Bonds honored the couple in 1982. The Hermelins established a recreation area through the Jewish National Fund and set up scholarships for Hebrew . University, Hadassah and oth- er organizations. Also, the family endowed a University of Michiagn chair — the Irving M. Hermelin Cu- Irving Hermelin rator of Judaica. In 1994, Mr. Hermelin was invited to the White House.
