JOHN R

minute Bible stories from the
Old Testament. And then I did
one from the New Testament,"
she said. "Having been brought
up as a Jewish child and being
a Jewish adult, I didn't really
know the story of Christ. I'd
, read it, of course, but I'd never
really analyzed it."
"This doesn't have to do with
belief structures; it has to do
with cultural literacy,"
she adds. "I believe that Jew-
ish children should also know
— really know — what's going
on in homes that are not Jew-
ish."
Lewis readily admits to feel-
ing a certain sense of alien-
ation as an American Jew,
even today. "I function from a
ghetto mentality," she con-
fessed. "I've never experienced
anti-Semitism that I can iden-
tify as such, but I still feel
alienated."
Although she was born and
raised in New York City, she
feels that she inherited her
sense of alienation from her fa-
ther. "Daddy was from what
could be called the old school.'
He was born about 100 kilo-
meters from Vilna and came
here as a boy."
A feeling for the fragility of
Jewish existence could be said
to have been passed on to
Lewis. "You pick up the neu-
roses of your family," she said
with a small chuckle.
At the same time, she read-
ily admits to seeing real
progress. At this year's
Thanksgiving Day Parade in
New York, she performed a
Chanukah song, "the first one
in the 69-year history of the pa-
rade," she noted.
Moments like that and
shows like the Chanukah spe-
cial will, she hopes, "reduce the
alienation just a little." ❑
