Q: Is it true that a Jew helped fund the establishment of the Na- tional Bank of Egypt? A: Indeed it is. Sir Ernest Joseph Cassel (1852-1921) was born in Ger- many, then at 16 immigrated to England. He worked first for a grain dealer in Liverpool, and lat- er joined the famed banking firm of Bischoffsheim and Gold- schmidt in London. Cassel was an almost imme- diate success at Bischoffsheim and Goldschmidt, and he was asked to become partner. Instead, he founded his own internation- al banking firm, whose projects included helping fund the first National Bank of Egypt and fi- nancing foreign governments, in- cluding China and Morocco. A close colleague and friend of King Edward II, Ck. :;sel made many donations to secular char- ities. He married a gentile and converted to Christianity. AP PHOTO/ ENRIC F. MARTI . Q: Are any communities in Israel named for American Jews? A: Probably the most famous is Netanya, one of Israel's ma- jor cities, located on the coast be- tween Tel Aviv and Haifa. Founded in 1929, Netanya is named for Nathan Straus (1848- 1931), a member of the promi- nent New York merchant family (Macy's Department Store, Abra- ham and Straus Department Store). Straus had a lifelong in- terest in public health and con- tributed generously to provide pure milk, food and shelter to the poor of New York. He gave most of his money, however, to projects — including the establishment of numerous health centers — benefiting the Jews of Palestine. Others places named for American Jews include: Ein Ha-Shofet, a kibbutz in northern Israel founded in 1937 by American Jewish immigrants. The name, "the judge's spring," commemorates Louis D. Bran- deis (1856-1941). A native of Louisville, Ken., Brandeis built a successful law practice in Boston. In 1916, upon President Wilson's nomination and subse- quent Senate confirmation, he became the first Jew to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court. Brandeis was a leader of the American Zionist movement and inspired modern business methods in Palestinian Zionism. Ramat Ha-Shofet, a kibbutz in northern Israel founded in 1941. The name, "height of the judge," commemorates Judge Ju- lian W. Mack (1866-1943).
