by the year 2000, some 75 per-
cent of Jewish women will be in
the workforce. Also, he said by
the year 2000 about 25 percent
of the Jewish community will be
senior citizens. How to include
seniors is part of his drive.
Rabbi Syme holds a doctorate
in education from Columbia Uni-
versity Teachers College and has
taught at the New York campus
of the Hebrew Union College-
Jewish Institute of Religion. Mo-
ment Magazine once highlighted
him as one of its "Jews to Watch
in the '80s — and Beyond," and
Lifestyles magazine readers vot-
ed him one of the 18 North Amer-
ican Jews "who will be most
influential in shaping the future
of the Jewish community in the
'90s and into the 21st century."
He serves as vice president of
the American Zionist Youth
Movement and as a director at
large of the board of the Jewish
National Fund, as a board mem-
ber of the United Israel Appeal
and as a vice president of the

"I'm very happy for him and for
Temple Beth El," said the senior
Rabbi Syme. "I think it will be a
great partnership. He's going to
bring a great deal to this Jewish
community. He is a first-rate rab-
bi. We don't have a national
celebrity in the rabbinate like him.
He is known all over the country."
"I have a lot of dreams for De-
troit," Rabbi Daniel Syme said.
"I intend to bring programs
which will eradicate the term
`youth suicide' from religious life."
Rabbi Syme's youngest brother,
Michael, took his life in 1975.
Youth suicide prevention is one
of his major causes.
Another effort is in the role of
the family in Jewish life. He
talked about the need for more
Jewish day-care centers, because
