Kosher?
Rep. Newt Gingrich's favorite his-
torian is apparently kosher, af-
ter all.
Anti-Defamation League Di-
rector Abraham Foxman ap-
peared at a news conference with
the House Speaker to endorse
Christina Jeffrey, who ran into a
buzz saw earlier this year when
she was appointed to the post of
House historian.
The controversy centered on
Ms. Jeffrey's actions as a mem-
ber of an Education Department
panel that looked into the pio-
neering Holocaust curriculum
project, "Facing History and Our-
selves." In her evaluation, Ms.
Jeffrey criticized the program for
imbalance — a judgment that
produced charges of anti-Semi-
tism that the scholar has spent
months trying to counter.
Apparently that effort paid off;
Mr. Gingrich indicated that he
wants his former colleague at
Kennesaw State College in
Marietta, Ga. to become a
House consultant on education-
al matters.
"For us to have credibility as
experts in anti-Semitism, we
have to be sensitive and wise
about using the term," Mr. Fox-
man said in an interview.
"Here was a woman who made
a significant mistake-but who was
pilloried, labeled an anti-Semite
and called a Holocaust denier.
The result is that her reputation
and her dignity were hurt."

absolved.
Mr. Foxman said that Ms. Jef-
frey approached him in her effort
to restore her reputation.
"I looked at the record," he
said. "Maybe she made a mistake
— but this is not an albatross
that should be around her neck
for the rest of her life."
His talks with Mr. Gingrich on
the Jeffrey matter produced an-
other result, Mr. Foxman said:
"He agreed with me that we have
to face up to the broader issue of
how reputations can be destroyed
by such accusations, and by the
media feeding frenzy. So ADL
and a major school of journalism
will hold a colloquium in Wash-
ington to discuss ways to restrain
ourselves, when it's appropriate,
and to become more sensitive
about the use of language. There
are terms that are abused — in-
cluding, sometimes, anti-Semi-
tism."
Mr. Gingrich has promised to
be part of the gathering, which
may take place in the spring, and
to enlist the participation of his
opposite number, Minority Leader
Richard A. Gephardt, D-Mo.
