harmless, it's beneficial. The giv-
ing of gifts makes for good asso-
ciations with Chanukah."
To create a less indulgent
Chanukah, some families are
creating their own traditions.
Like the Goldbergs, some fami-
lies exchange gifts on the first
and last nights. Still others give
them every night, but keep them
small.
Here's another possibility:
Give each night a theme. In The
Art of Jewish Living: Hanukah
by Ron Wolfson, one family
makes the first night Big Gift
Night, the third night is Poem
Night and the sixth night, the
Gift of Self Night.
With all the talk of gifts, Rab-
bi Joel Levine of Temple Judea
in West Palm Beach reminds his
congregants to remember their
priorities.
"Chanukah as we know it is
made in North America. It's
overblown," he said. "While we
are giving gifts, the rest of the
world is giving gelt and eating
donuts." ❑

coins. As we know, Chanukah
is not a major holiday, but it is

entire marketplace and the pub-
lic arena. By providing gifts we
enable Jewish children to feel
they have special rewards at this
time," said Rabbi Groner.
Rabbi Groner believes that
giving eight gifts can be positive
or negative. He suggests that
one major gift on the first or last
night of Chanukah with small
gifts the other nights are rea-
sonable. He acknowledges that
eight lavish gifts are excessive
and unnecessary.
"So what if Chanukah gifts
are an American tradition," said
Rabbi Howard Shapiro of Tem-
ple Israel in West Palm Beach,
Fla.
"There are lots of things we do
as part of secular American so-
ciety," Rabbi Shapiro said.
"There are two choices: fight it
or co-opt it because it's not only
