IKEA Joins
Furniture Market

Los Angeles (JTA) — IKEA, the
Scandinavian-based furniture gi-
ant, has decided to enter the Is-
rael market.
In the near future, the world-
wide furniture chain is expect-
ed to name the Israeli company
that will represent it in the Jew-
ish state.
In the past, IKEA has turned
down dozens of requests by po-
tential franchisers in Israel.
The decision to head for Israel
reportedly was made at a meet-
ing in Zurich of the board of the
IKEA group of companies.
IKEA is no stranger to contro-
versy, particularly when it comes
to Jewish concerns.
Last year, the Simon Wiesen-
thal Center investigated IKEA's
corporate policies, after reports
that the company founder and
chairman, Ingvar Kamprad, was
associated with Sweden's leading
fascist in the immediate post-
World War II years.
The investigation was ex-
panded to include IKEA's possi-
ble complicity in the Arab
economic boycott of Israel.
Top IKEA officials subse-
quently flew to Los Angeles for
discussions with Rabbi Abraham
Cooper, associate dean of the
Wiesenthal Center here.
The IKEA representatives
pledged to reconsider their past
"business" policy.
Of IKEA's recent decision to
enter the Israeli market, Rabbi
Cooper said he was hopeful that
it would "put another nail in the
coffin of the Arab economic boy-
cott of Israel" as well as "influ-
ence other multinational
corporations to bolster the peace
process in the Middle East by in-
vesting in the region."

Gingrich, Foxman
Meet Historian

Washington (JTA) — Com-
mending Christina Jeffrey for her
tenacity in trying to clear her
name, House Speaker Newt Gin-
grich agreed to meet with the
House historian he fired in Jan-
uary for her controversial review
of a Holocaust education pro-
gram.
In a Nov. 13 letter to Ms. Jef-
frey, Mr. Gingrich, R-Ga., wrote,
" I recognize it has been a long
and difficult journey for you. I
commend your tenacity."
Mr. Gingrich agreed to meet
with Ms. Jeffrey and Anti-
Defamation League National Di-
rector Abraham Foxman, who
came to Ms. Jeffrey's defense in
August, saying that she was un-
fairly stigmatized and mislabeled
anti-Semitic upon her dismissal.
Mr. Gingrich said he intends
