The Cultural Commission of
Congregation Beth Achim will
host its Book Bites discussion se-
ries on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 7:30
p.m. at the home of Arthur and
Mary Sugarman.
The book to be discussed is
The Heat ofRamadan by Steven
Hartov, a thriller involving the
Israelis and a Palestinian. The
reviewer will be Les Hubert.
There is no charge for this se-
ries. Dessert will be served. To
attend, respond to the synagogue
office, 352-8670.
The books discussed in this se-
ries are available at the syna-
gogue's library and at local
bookstores.

Chanukah programs for all ages
will take place at both the Maple-
Drake and Jimmy Prentis Mor-
ris locations.
The child Development Center's
annual Family latke Dinner and
Workshop will be held on Dec. 13,
for students and their families.
Senior adults will enjoy two
chanukah parties: The Si Israel
Memorial Chanukah Party at
Maple-Drake on Dec. 18, and the
Boaz Siegel Chanukah Concert
at JPM on the 18.
A workshop on Healthful
Chanukah Cooking will take
place on Dec. 7 at 1 a.m. from the
Adult and Family Enrichment
Dept. at Maple-Draek and at 6
p.m. at JPM
The annual JCC/Jewish News
Chanukah Party will take place
on Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. at JPM fea-
turing the Mask Puppet Theatre.
The JCC Child Development
Center will welcome Chanukah
on weekdays by lighting the com-
munity menorah at 3:15 p.m.

Aish HaTorah
Offers Courses

Aish HaTorah will offer the five-
week crash course to read He-
brew and the five-week crash
course in Basic Jewish concepts.
The reading course teaches par-
ticipants the basics of Hebrew
reading in the five lessons. Each
lesson lasts for an hour and a
half.
The course in basic concepts
is also a five-week program. The
topics dealt with will include the
Jewish view on God and mean-
ing, soul, death and afterlife, sex-
uality, and reward and
punishment.

At the next Oneg Shabbat of the
Sholem Aleichem Institute, on
Friday, Dec. 8, Ruth Kroll, Nor-
ma Shifrin, and Molly Sallen will
participate in a discussion on
"Contemporary Jewish Women
- Writers, Thinkers, and Ac-
tivists."
The meeting at the Franklin
Pointe clubhouse, will start at
8 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

JPI Hosts
Chanukah Fun

The Jewish Parents Institute
will sponsor a Chanukah cele-
bration on Sunday, Dec. 17, at
10:15 a.m. at the Maple-Drake
JCC. The program is free and the
entire community is invited.
Children's activities will in-
clude: dramatic improvisation,
entertainment, cookie decorat-
ing, dreidel games, crafts, treats.

Volunteer Time
For Holiday

The Jewish community is invit-
ed to give the gift of time to
Christian friends when they vol-
unteer for the annual Christmas
Day Volunteer Extravaganza 9
a.m.-2 p.m., Dec. 25.
Participants will meet at the
Max M.Fisher Building to re-
ceive assignments and arrange
transportation. Activities in-
clude: preparing and serving
lunch at a homeless shelter, en-
tertaining and preparing and
serving lunch at a homeless shel-
ter, entertaining and preparing
lunch for women and children
at a domestic violence shelter,
visiting patients at a hospital,
staffing the gift and library carts
at a hospital and visiting with
residents at a home for the aged.
The holiday mitzvah program
is sponsored by the Jewish Fed-
eration of Metropolitan Detroit
and its Young Adult Division,
Business & Professional Women,
Women's Division and commu-
nity Outreach & Involvement
Department.
Volunteer choices are being ac-
cepted through Dec. 15.

The normal deadline for local news and
publicity items is noon Thursday, eight
days prior to issue date. 'The deadline for
birth announcements is 10 a.m. Monday,
four days prior to issue date; out-of-town
obituaries, I0 a.m. Tuesday, three days
prior to issue date.
