then the girl hears the story of a
pillow that was once a bed that
kept a little girl warm in the ghet-
to and helped a Christian who
saved the little girl's life.
- The Christmas Menorahs
(Albert Whitman), by Janice
Cohn and Bill Farnsworth, tells
the true story of how the resi-
dents of Billings, Mont., fought
back when the town's Jewish
families began receiving anti-Se-
mitic attacks.
"It was the third night of
Hanukkah. At Isaac Schnitzer's
house, there was a menorah in
almost every window. Isaac was
in the den, working on his math
homework. Suddenly, there was
a loud crash." A rock had
smashed through the window,
knocking Isaac's menorah onto
the floor. The perpetrator had
vanished.
Isaac is amazed to hear from
the police that the crime was
anti-Semitic. "Someone threw a
rock in my window because I'm
Jewish?" he asks.
But it is not only Isaac who is
amazed. When the story of the
incident is aired on the news,
members of the community de-
cide to do something on their
own. Remembering how the King
of Denmark put on a yellow Star
of David when the invading
Nazis insisted Jews do the same,
the citizens of Billings decide they
will place a picture of a menorah,
printed in the Billings Gazette, in
their own windows.
Isaac's mother tells her son,
"Hate can make a lot of noise.
Love and courage are usually qui-
eter. But in the end, they're the
strongest."

ntil We Meet Again
(Charles River Press), by
Michael Korenblit and
Kathleen Janger, is the
true story of two sweethearts
whose love sustained them dur-
ing the Holocaust.
Their names were Manya and
Meyer. Both were Jewish and
Polish and 17 in 1942. First they
went into hiding, then they were
sent to a ghetto, and finally they
were deported to Auschwitz and
Dachau. But they survived, and
after the war reunited in their
home town of Hrubieszow.
Until We Meet Again was writ-
ten by Manya's and Meyer's son,
a native of Ponca City, Okla.
Also new on the Holocaust is
Child of the Ghetto (GiRo
Press) by Edda Servi Machlin,
the story of the author's life as a
young Jewish Italian girl living
in a country headed by Benito
Mussolini. She writes of her fam-
ily, of assimilation and anti-Semi-
tism, of hiding in the Tuscan
countryside during the war and
of life after Mussolini. The book

also is filled with charming pho-
tos and compelling stories about
Jewish life in Italy.
"The main piazza in Pitigliano
(an ancient Jewish ghetto where
the author was raised), the focal
point of every public event and of
almost every social gathering
during the summer months, was
flanked on its east and west by
two open spaces overlooking the
gorges excavated by small rivers
over the course of millennia. At
dusk, at that melancholy hour be-
tween the end of the workday
and supper time, many small
landowners, back from farming
their plots several kilometers
from the village, would lean side
by side on the parapets of these
large open windows facing the
rural landscape. These men, un-
used to human interaction after
a long day of solitary farming,
sparingly addressed one anoth-
er, and then mainly to counsel
each other on what the weather
might be like the next day."

the Nazi regime, including Her-
mann Goering and Rudolf Hess.
Shoah (Da Capo) is the com-
plete text of Claude Lanzmann's
landmark film about the Holo-
caust, newly revised and cor-
rected by Mr. Lanzmann himself.
Franz Kafka: A Biography (Da
Capo) is an account of the life of
the famed author of such works
